GM an american bankrupt company....like many others that were managed by people like Need more oil for GM...not bad but not all bimmers ended up in the junkyard, I squeeze more MPG from my 95' 325 than most of your "reliable" 2000's GM cars..and yes it's been VERY reliable thank God!

^ I beg to differ. Over the past couple years I had a blazer for a few months before it completely crapped out with only a few hundred miles to 80,000 on the odometer. I currently drive an 02 Explorer and there's something going wrong with it everyday. I've already had two transmissions (that's why they're called exploders) in it. If it wasn't still under warranty when I got the new tranny I would not still be driving it. There are tons of little problems as well, such as malfunctioning lights, plastic parts in the interior breaking, and a bunch of other things. I also have an 87 honda accord with approx. 220,000 miles and its still running strong with barely any problems. That car will never die. You want reliability, buy Japanese. If you want American and reliability, buy an american car thats 20+ years old and fix it up.

The one series became the 3 series. BMW needs to shrink the models back down and put them on a diet. the 1 series should top out at $33k with all the options. The 1 series was a good idea but the executed it wrong. They got greedy.

@ VR666: Buick already does have a place in this world, it's China.

And in my opinion I was very excited when they first mentioned the release of the 1 series but was disappointed after the first reviews were released. It's a stylish looking little car but I believe is overpriced. For a few more dollars you can get a roomier 3 series. What I was most disappointed in was it's track numbers. You'd think by putting the twin turbo 6 from the 335i into the 135i would make a monster with outstanding track numbers. Well according to road and track the numbers are almost identical to the 335i. That just doesn't make sense to me, they're taking a 300+ horsepower engine and putting it into a smaller, supposedly lighter car. Shouldn't that mean all around better performance?! And why would the new M version have a twin turbo 4 when they can just keep the 6. I've heard from many people it can be tuned to put out a lot more power than stock.

How about a BMW that weighs less than 3000 lbs??? Now that they've fired Bangle, it's time to lose the lard. There are way too many cars for less money than the 1-Series that spank it.

I like the idea of BMW getting back to basics with the 120i. I think it will sell well here. The current 1 series is just too expensive. BMW's quality is not much worse than GM's.

I swear, NMOFGM must be on drugs. Down deep, I think we all wish the Big 3 had better quality. We're all American here, I would love to buy an American car, but I gave up on that a long time ago. Their quality has improved, but until they are on par with Toyota and Honda, I won't buy one. Period.

@need for oil for gm
I bet Clarkson will eventually say that c**ks are driving CTS-Vs, although the CTS-V is just amazing.
Anyway, the 1-series is a great car, and I would love to see a return of the 2002, a simple (no frills), cheap, and fun BMW, although this one is just a 328i/335i put in the washing machine, but still.

@oil for gm.

>>As Clarkson said, "BMW’s and Audis are driven by “****s” and posuers. It’s just not cool to drive a foriegn POS anymore."<<

1) Clarkson is from the UK....so his "domestics" are Jaguar, Land Rover, etc.... and do please enlighten us on what he said about the CTS, especially about how the interior compares to a Lexus.

2) He said c*cks used to drive M3s but then they switched to driving A4/6 so its now safe again to drive an M3 w/o being a c*ck.

NMOGM, as long as you're quoting Clarkson, tell us what he had to say about the CTS. I think the kindest word he used was "rubbish," along with the crack that "Americans can't build cars." So, either believe him or don't, but don't cherry-pick.

I agree with key4wheels -- the 1-series is way overpriced, trapped as it is between the MINI and the 3-series. The MINI goes up over $25k easy, and they don't want to cannibalize that business. But in an ideal world the 1-series would price out at $24k-$29k.

Great idea BMW!!! I'm glad u listened a little, 2.0 turbo would be great, price it in the 20's, even high 20's would even be better. I would be in line to buy that car and so will many people i know. By that time however the 335i and 135i will be at the used lot, so people might have more options for the 20 grand.

To those of you who yearn for BMWs from the past, or any marque for that matter, just go buy one that's either already restored or in restorable condition. Odds are pretty good that if you're interested you're not the only one.

Working for BMW and getting a lot of traded in Cadillacs and Acuras I will say that nothing in this world compares to the way a BMW drives for the money. If you want a true stickshift car just man up and get a 135i or 335i. There's nothing like the perfection in those gearboxes. To even mention a Buick is to state, "Hey I'm about 65 years old and am too blind to see what I'm actually driving." I don't care if you support GM. You're f cking retarded if you think Buick has a place in this world. My eyes burn everyday I'm unlucky enough to see one.

I wish they redesign it, but call it the 2 series maybe so it doesn't clash with the M1

idrinorbarsaku I totally agree with you, NMOFGM doesn't know jack shit about cars. The man is probably someone who was with GM and now they want him to sweet talk their cars when in reality all they are is a pile of S#!T.

Back to the topic....the Bimmer 1 series I believe is nothing more than a scaled down 3 series with almost identical pricing...so the pricing move by BMW was definitely a good call. Secondly because of that pricing I believe this is why you still see more 3 series coupes/convert's/sedans on the road compared to the 1 Series. They're both great cars but I still prefer the 3 series.

For the price of a cramped little overwieght, unreliable, low quality rattletrap 1 series, one could buy a perfectly nice DI CTS with world class quality and GM dependibility/reliability. As Clarkson said, BMW's and Audis are driven by "cocks" and posuers. It's just not cool to drive a foriegn POS anymore.

Drive a Cadillac CTS, you're a dolt if you don't.

The 1-series is a great looker and probably performer (don't know, never drove one) but that base model price tag just doesn't add up in my mind. I think it could be priced a good 6 to 8K less. Didn't LLN just post an article on how BMW's profits are down some 90% in 2008? A smarter MSRP would bring more people into the showrooms. Although I suppose this would undermine BMW enthusiasts perception that the blue and white propeller badge is why they pay the price in the beginning.

Add to my previous post - being simpler would likely make them more reliable and lower maintenance costs.

Reliability is quite good for most cars these days and even those rated poorly by CR et al are often well within acceptable limits for many people. The real thing to focus on is maintenance costs. A few years ago I looked at a 528 and did some research (including talking to several current owners).

The maintenance costs were included for new cars but in years 5+, they are absolutely ridiculous. So anyone considering a long term purchase should be very careful or make good friends with a local mechanic ;)

1-series lighter and simpler wont really happen, but a sub-1-series sounds reasonable

reliability has never been an issue as far as i know; unlike ANY GM-Product... but well, those who care know that already

Also remember the 1 and 3 series are pretty much brand new cars over the previous generation, so there are kinks to be worked out, just like any first run vehicle.

I took a look at the data on the BMW 3 vs. CTS for '06 model year. Data has initial quality at 3 months with BMW at 2 1/2 stars and the CTS at 4 stars. At 3 years the reliability of the 3 series and CTS are the same at 4 1/2 stars. So in the end they are equal in reliability at 3 years.

How about a BMW that's reliable? Huh? How about a car that doesn't end up in the junkyard after the warranty expires? How about a car with the qaulity of a Buick Lacrosse or a Cadillac CTS?

LOL, never gonna happen. The Germans aren't capable of producing anything but sh1t.
