Yeah get Foster out of here, I’m reading his/Mervich’s comments, and Mervich comes across as someone who might know a thing or two, someone who knows how to spell a 2 syllable word correctly, and Foster, well I do believe he works for BMW, but as Ricardo Head said, he probably is the lot cleanup boy, or he gets coffee for the sales people, and here he is on here acting like he runs the company, talking as much smack as he knows how to.

Foster: Here’s some advice, to be taken seriously, don’t blow up in your posts, don’t use unnecessary caps and swear at everyone right and left, and for the love of god, if you’re going to swear, don’t mis-spell the swears, or any words for that matter, it makes you look really, really bad.

BMW has long been a company positioned on the cutting edge of technology, in both the automotive and motorcycle fields. These new technologies have sometimes been unproven in long term usage and therefore, quite often reliability is compromised. BMW is also a manufacturer committed to performance. Vehicle components often trade off long life and reliability in favor of excellent performance.

During the warranty period, BMW probably has the very best coverage offered by any manufacturer…bar none. They totally stand behind their product and it is an excellent product. When that warranty expires, the upkeep of that cutting edge, performance vehicle becomes the owners responsibility.

I am not talking about oil and filter changes or renewing the brakes or nearly any basic, routine maintenance procedure. Replacing a clutch, any part of the engine electronics, brake calipers, replacing a transmission, etc., or any major repair on an out of warranty BMW will cost the owner a small fortune. This is considered to be normal wear and tear on a performance, cutting edge vehicle. This will average $300 to $500 per month…in some cases more.

BMW makes an excellent, most satisfying drivers car, BUT after warranty it can become a very expensive proposition.

The 335i coupe has a longer wheelbase than the old 850. I think it may be a quit a bit quicker andit is definitely a whole lot cheaper than the big 8 V12 coupe.

It is a bargain.

A good friend of mine had a 850Ci, but he had to sell it after a few years as it just ate money like crazy. Tottaly awesome car though.

Obviously, Mr. Foster, you’ve never been closer to a BMW than a brochure or magazine ad. You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. I apologise if I have attacked your dream machine. As I said before, BMW is an outstanding product…in many respects, probably the best. If you will go back and read (you can read, can’t you?) my post carefully, I referenced long term ownership of a BMW…that would imply after the warranty has expired. My BMW was meticulously cared for, after all, it is a very expensive machine. Trust me, BMW isn’t unlike any other manufacturer, when the warranty is gone, they want nothing to do with the upkeep of your car…their part is complete. At that point, a BMW becomes a money pit. I conservatively stated an average upkeep figure of $300 to $400 per month…in reality, the figure is closer to $300 to $500 per month, depending on the model. Oh yes, at the time of my ownership, I was employed by BMW, North America, so I believe I am qualified to speak on the subject.

FIRST ASHER GOOD LUCK GETTING ONE FOR 75 WITH 5-10K
MORE LIKE 96 THATS WHAT WERE SELLING USED ONES FOR.
SECOND ITS ONLY BEEN ABOUT A YEAR THE 07S ARE JUST GETTING HERE. THERE COUNTING THE MODLE YEAR NOT REALLY HOW LONG THEY HAVE BEEN OUT. THAT NUMBER IS WORLD WIDE NOT THAT MANY HERE.
M6 HAS ONLY BEEN OUT FOR 5 AND 1/2 MONTHS.

Renton is dead on. I am a researcher where we study reliability and dependability. The data is really clear BMW is near the bottom of the list. They are making improvement, but just about everyone else is improving faster.
That said while under warranty the cost of maintenance is very low, lower than the Asian luxury brands, if you don’t mind your car sitting at the dealer rather than under your butt. Just get rid of it before the warranty expires

I’ve had several BMWs, they all had some sort of problem. Some minor, some major. BMW stood by the car and repaired it.

I’ve also owned other new cars, they also had problems. Many times I had to pay for the factory/design error, or was left w/o a rental/loaner. Not with BMW..

Cars are complicated machines and getting more and more complicated. An M5/M6 mote is one of the most exotic engines you may ever own if you are lucky. Chances are it will never let you down, and if it does, BMW will stand by it.

Until the warranty runs out.

That said, no other car gives you the ride/handling/performance/price/warranty combo that BMW does.

Go ahead and buy the boring Lexus. I’ll have more fun in my 335i

considering ive seen one M5 and no M6s, and 6 bentley continental’s, i would have thought theyd sold alot less than that. Thats awesome though, obviously predictible as these two cars are amazing

BMW makes an outstanding product…no doubt about that. In many respects, it very well may be the the best. But, Ricardo Head is correct…if you’ve ever owned a BMW, especially over an extended period of time (5 or 6 years), the brand has very little dependability and/or reliability and the repair costs will likely average $300 to $400 per month. Been there, done that, bought the tee-shirt.

20,000 engines… but I wonder how many cars. I know there were quite a few engines replaced because of an oil problem and improper towing.

I’d guess far more M5s sold due to their earlier release date. That engine is truly AMAZING and sounds like no other car and makes me want an M5 now that they’re down to about 75k with 5-10k mi on them…

the throw must be almost three times as far as the f1 motor, in order for 8k to equal 20k in rpm and piston head speed. plus the new V8 F1 motor cost ~$1Billion to engineer.

I’m interested to know how many of each car have been sold.

Off the top of my head I would guess that more M5s have been sold than M6s, but I’d be interested to see what the breakdown looks like.
