BMW developing new matte finish paint

06/12/2006, 9:18 AM

BMW is fast-tracking development of a new matte finish paint after generating a great deal of interest with a similar finish on its Z4 Coupe concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year. “Surfaces on the vehicle turn to sculpture with this paint,” Z4 Coupe project manager Timo Gobel says.” It is a big technical challenge,” Gobel says. “There are many changes necessary, from the factory paintshop to caring for the finish.” There are also practicality issues, such as preserving it against everything from sap and tar to fingerprints. “We have no idea yet on how we will be able to repair it,” said Gobel. Still, BMW insists it will overcome the problems and be the first company to bring it to market.

The car you never have to polish is on the way.

Wrong. If it’s painted at all, and you want it to retain any sort of ‘new’ look, you’ll have to polish it. Waxing is another story, but any surface will become contaminated & have to be rubbed out every now and then.

I will say that it will be an attractive look for some cars, but surface maintenace will still be required.

I liked it on the Z4 coupe concept…really made a unique impression. One of my neighbors has an army green Z4 convertible (factory custom colors are available) that I think would look much better with a matte finish.

What I think all this means is you should wait like 5 years after the new finish makes it to production so that BMW has time to iron out the “bugs”. Then, you’ll know if the painted surface is worth it.

#5: no, you mixed them up. A Honda will give you a matte finish for free after a few months in the sun… ;-)

BMW is importing color palettes from its motorcycle arm- BMW Motorrad. Matte silver, gray, and black are nice colors but I am not so sure about other colors like that green Z4. It looks weird.
