This goes out to the Audi bregade, as it is quite clear that they are the ones bitching about this car.
I wonder if you can read, but anyone can correct me if i am wrong. But isnt this a CONCEPT CAR rather than something intended for production.
I know by now some of you are going to jump in and say concepts often end up as production cars. But please can you guys be pragmatic, this whole project is a study to look at other ways to build cars. And as some of the posted comments highlighted, some of the cues from this concept are going to start apearing on other cars. So in a nutshell BMW leads and other follow by perfecting what they started.

It is quite funny how jelousy and envy always clouds a persons judgement, provided there is any. ;)

bimmer, im all for weight reduction like everyone else, but in this case, it is cool but not practical. even as an exercise it all just seems like its for fun with the intent to showboat BMW. theres no way there going to produce a car like this unless they figure how to make it impact safe. anyways this car is only practical for women who, might want to dress there cars up differently everyday. nah, it is cool tho.

This is the kind of original design I was looking for, not an idea that everyone is is copying (ala the 4 door coupe idea).

I actually think this is really cool. The car itself to me, just plain and normal is a little ugly, not really thought out. But once you see the details that were put into it, and watch the movie you get a little bit different of an idea.

I looked at the photos, and I couldn't help but notice one picture had the bonnet separated in the center, the other didn't! That kinda took me by surprise, don't see much like that very often... or at all. But I really like the "human characteristics" that they supposedly put into it. The thing I probably like the most is the bonnet when it "opens", reminds me of a rib cage with the ridges in the fabric revealing the "heart", or engine. The headlights probably surprised me the most. I don't know how this would work if you got a large tree limb or something puncture it in a tightly stretched spot however.

Blakkarr,
I agree with you 100%.
Everyone bitches and moans that all modern cars are too heavy. But when BMW comes out with unique approach to fight weight problem, everybody is trying to put it down for weight savings. Go on, buy your SUV or a pick-up truck and shut the fuck up about it being overweight, it dismal fuel economy and poor handling together with acceleration!

Somehow I doubt a production unit using a cloth body would be so easy to damage. They would consider such things as debris on the roads, the odd branch for a bush or tree, and just daily life.

The car would be sheathed in material that any Cop or Soldier would love to wear into action. Stuff that can take small arms fire, being stabbed with a knife or anything larger than a two penny nail, being set on fire, and being left in the sun for months or years on end. Such materials already exist. They are so tough you need power tools to cut it and steel will melt before it burns and is water and stain proof.

Really do need to study aircraft materials going back a few decades.

No hail or ding damage ever again. A body that weighs about 40 lbs, can change shape to met the needs of the driver, usually a sports car (I can't see this on a family or luxury car - forget trucks). Want to change body colors, just pull a few - dozen snaps and pull on a new "suit".

Real Active aerodynamics, Easy change body coloring and schemes, new design possibilities, and the most interesting Non-hybrid car technology, in a long time.

Gods, this cars concept is so cool and doable it is nearly insane. Interweave Kevlar ribbons, Synthetic polymer threading, Fine wiring mesh for firmness, basically the same formula as heavy body armor, Seal the cloth, even add fiber optics to almost turn the cars body into a video screen...

This is nuts! I love this idea. The best one BMW has had in years!

It's so funny to see so many people say this concept is pointless!
Bad news for you my friends: you might have heard: MOST concepts are just that: pointless works of art meant to convey new ideas! This car excels at this!
I like Chris Bangle as a car designer. He's the type of designer everybody loves to hate! He's leads an entire team of designers that actually think outside the box. Sometimes when thinking outside the box, some side-effects can occur like some of the designer's ideas penetrating some of the most sacred "holes" in people's minds!
I think this concept is really cool just because of that: it makes narrow-minded people say "that's outrageous and pointless, nobody would do that!" It's like beer: brings out the racist redneck in some people that might work for Affirmative Action while sober :p
I hope no real-life rednecks working for Affirmative Action are offended by my comment!

Completely stupid. You can change the shape of the car with a touch of a button? Unfortunately, all the designs that it will change to are Bangle designs. Is there even any talk of crashworthiness? There must be more than a skeletal structure underneath to protect the occupants, right?

The looks to be very interesting. I wonder how the material will hold up to the pressures of of high speed, high down force, aerodynamics. The frame shouldn't be a problem, making it crash-worthy

Strange how some people don't quiet get how advanced aircraft technology is over automobile technology that when a company tries it one a concept that they instantly say it is "stupid" or otherwise a bad idea. Imaginer how much better cars could be if, when responsibly used, aircraft material technologies were used to make car lighter, faster, and more flexible.

I would lay odds that we will see a super or exotic sports car with an adaptive cloth body in the next ten years.

The car could have been another color though. Silver is so over played it is actually quite boring now. The car looks mostly featureless with out some color scheme or just another color to give the car a personality that Is there but masked under that bland neutral silver coloring. Maybe different colored lights or environment?

Cool idea though. Boring execution.

Aircraft had fabric frame coverings and wing coverings for decades, before aluminum became cheap enough to use, so I guess that's the concept here. I can't say I would be interested unless the material was Tyvek or Kevlar (both used in bulletproof vests and flak helmets). Oh, and Chris Bangle has the aesthetics of Hellen Keller crossed with the good taste of Wayne Newton and Ivana Trump.

wow everyone that hates this thing is retarded, it is absolutely amazing and if the cost could be made mainstream as with any technology something like this could surely be the future. He's right... who said that a car has to be made entirely out of metal?

I like the idea, and if they could get it to be completely seamless it would greatly reduce drag. But, how easy would this be to vandalize? Oops, I just keyed your car and tore a huge hole down the entire side of it.
