Rumors have been circling that BMW will offer a tii version of some of its cars ever since the German automaker displayed its 1-series tii concept at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, and a new report indicates those rumors were right on the money.
According to Car – who sat down with BMW chief Norbert Reithofer — BMW has given the tii program the green light for both the 1- and 3-series. While the tii package will initially be launched as a range of performance parts, it will likely spawn into a separate model (more on this later).
As Leftlane previously reported, the tii package will include an assortment of aero packages, wheels, tires, weight-saving bits and even engine upgrades — both for the 1- and 3-series.
While the new tii performance parts are definitely a good thing for BMW fans, they do have a downside. The availability of these parts and the already impressive performance of the 135i has led BMW to rule against the M treatment for the 1-series. Per Norbert Reithofer, there will be no M1 (or whatever name the car would have ended up with).
But back to the tii. According to Car, there is actually a high probability that the next-generation of the 1- and 3-series will see a tii trim level. When the new 1-series bows in 2011, look for a tii version to be offered with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a much lighter body and chassis. The tii 1-series will basically serve as the model’s M1.
Same story for the next-gen 3-series when it bows in late 2011. The 3-series tii will slot in below the M3 but will offer the M3’s brakes, a sports suspension, 19 inch wheels and a twin-clutch transmission.
Adding credence to Car’s claim is the fact that BMW has already voiced that it would like to reduce the number of cylinders and weight on future models.
It looks as though stricter worldwide emissions and fuel economy regulations will radically change the types of cars we are used to, but at least automakers are hard at work to keep performance levels up.

Although it’ll be hard to get used to smaller engines, along with lower hp and torque numbers, it’s definitely the way of the future, as long as we’re on gasoline engines.
The good news is that performance, which may fall in the short run, should eventually equal, then better current vehicles as they are able to reduce vehicle weight over time. The first major step toward this might be when carbon fibre can be mass-produced.
By the time we get nano-engineered materials out, which is way into the future, I can’t imagine us to still be using gasoline internal combustion engines…

3 series today is a bigger car then Bavaria of 70s. Bavaria was equivalent of 7 series. They don’t need wight saving bits BMW needs seriously lightened cars. That is if they don’t want to pander to secretaries on low end and divorced dentist on high end.

BMW is riding a crest right now. I talk to people all the time who know very little about the modern automobile but are quite insistent that they must have a BMW. Good on BMW. Their marketing and supposed reputation is obviously paying dividends. By no means, however, are they the only ones guilty of up sizing the same car with every model cycle.
Weight savings comes at a cost. For the basic construction of a model to benefit from significant weight savings means significantly more expensive materials which, in turn, means significantly less profit should they choose to maintain their market segment.
BMW is being very opportunistic in letting their customers decide just how much the price of light weight is worth to them. I give them credit where credit is due.

So both the 1 and 3 series are getting the tii treatment? That’s good, also good for the 3 series as well. BMW is making a smart move of offering a more affordable performance variants of the 3 series because the M3 certainly isn’t cheap (as in price). I loved the 1 series tii concept and vowed that if they came out with something like that I’d look into a BMW down the road. Then reality hit me when the cost for a fully loaded 135i can cost almost 45k. for 5-6k more you could get a Audi S5 coupe. Anyways I’d look into getting a future 135i tii if it cost under 40k but I don’t see that happening.

My first car was an orange 2002 Tii, it was a gift but it had been driven from Europe to South Africa and back and was pretty rough when i got my hands on it. It was too expensive for a teenager to maintain and was eventually scrapped. I still have the steering wheel.
I just remember that when it was working it was truly awesome. I’m hankering after a white 135i with red leather interior, but if BMW were to make an orange 1 Series Tii I could be persuaded to re-enter the BMW fold

The biggest disappointment of the 135i for me was the price. 2nd was the weight of the vehicle. I thought it should have been 200 lbs lighter. BMW will charge $55k for the tii. At that price, i’d settle for a $25k E46 M3 and buy a S/C.

I’m not sure the engine from the 135i will end up in the ti series. Most probably a blown 4 cyl version of the 120i and for the 3-series a blown version of the 325i. Maybe they will even use the 2L 4cyl currently used in WTCC 320si. Exciting news nonetheless.

But where does the tii fit in the mix? We had M3 CS and CSL and now M3 tii? Or maybe the tii goodies will be for the lower priced cars to boost their excitiment? Good news, but curious.

Just out of curiousity I built a 135i to see if I could price it under a 45k fully loaded one and it’s certainly possible. The 135i starts out at $34,900. I didn’t select the luxury package ($3,000) because it is after all a BMW. I tried to opt for more performance just to see what it would cost and to see what maybe a tii would possibly at least cost. Well first off for every color they charge $475 so I chose lazer metallic blue, and I love red interior so I opted with the boston red leather seats ($1450)then the sport package ($1000) and finally the only option was active steering ($1400) It totalled out to 40k even. Obviously BMW is going to be offering quite a bit of performance accessories so maybe a base tii will be somewhat affordable but I still don’t see a 1 series tii costing less then 40k.

Ok so I guess you could get a pretty decent 135i if you opted for the white, red or black saving $475 as LaCaLover suggested. You’re right it would look beautiful in white with the red leather interior.
As mr.meanpants suggested, don’t get Active Steering saving $1400. Well my dream 135i just went down from 40k to $38,125.
on and the 135i convertible starts out 39k, so I really do wonder where this would leave a tii priced?
