BMW announces iPhone support for European vehicles

09/04/2007, 8:00 AM

By Drew Johnson

BMW has announced that it will add iPhone support to its European range of vehicles. The iPhone support technology will be available in all Minis and BMW’s 1, 3, 5 and 6-series, as well as the X5. The iPhone support is already available on BMW’s U.S. vehicles. Apple’s iPhone is set to hit select European markets later this month.

BMW was the first automaker to announce a fully integrated system for Apple’s brand-new iPhone.

“In 2004, BMW was the first to integrate the iPod into BMW vehicles and have customers take full control of their music on the road. So it seemed only logical that BMW be among the first to ensure iPhone owners have the same ability to enjoy their music, plus the added benefits of Bluetooth hands-free calling across our model line,” said a company spokesperson.

Initially, BMW only offered integration for U.S. models, but with increased international sales of the iPhone, BMW will continue to extend the technology across to other markets. BMW will debut its European iPhone-equipped vehicles at the Frankfurt Auto show on September 13.

I love BMWs but they should focus more on improving reliability and less on gadget integration.

Really, now… as far as BMW is concerned, the iPhone is just another iPod. Nothing new here.

More proof that BMW knows that in the US, driving dynamics/performance is NOT the primary sales motivator. Just like when they name Lexus a top competitor…

This iPhone mania is total xxxxx bs. IT’s the xxxxxx media, not the people. The media incessantly prints stories hyping it up. I bet Apple blew a mint paying off every news outlet and tech site on the web.

I am surrounded by young tech-savvy people at work, in their late-20’s or early-30’s with tons of disposable income to burn. Not ONE SINGLE xxxxxx person has mentioned they’re interested in the iPhone. Not ONE.

Are you talking about the ones you deliver mail to in their cubicles deantj?! LMAO!

I would tend to agree though. The hype behind the Camaro or Challenger is nothing compared to this iPhone. But that’s modern marketing/media. They’ll beat ya over the head with news and information until you submit. It’s difficult for me to believe that hordes of people will be standing in line for a $600 phone. Of course, following the iPhone hysteria news is an article about how there is no more middle class. Maybe the middle class makes bad financial decisions…

Highly inappropriate commentary about deantj Piablo. Very unclassy of you.

I think Bluetooth is enough for integration. Not everyone wants expensive hardware to accomodate an i-phone.

Exactly, Deanster. Full integration would mean using iPhone’s Safari to surf the web with iDrive (while in Park or Neutral with the E-Brake on of course), which would be damn near impossible, and besides, why not just use the phone anyway?

The wife and I went to the mall Friday night and had a chance to check it out. While I agree that the hype has been excessive, the device does live up to it. It’s sleek and very intuitive to use. I’ve been wanting to replace both my 2G iPod and my cell phone , so for me at least the iPhone makes perfect sense. On specs alone it blows away the competition and while I was at first skeptical about how it would all come together I am more than satisfied at the end result. I realize there are a lot of Apple haters out there, but you have to give them some credit. This is their first try in this market and of course subsequent versions will be better. But for a first try it’s pretty damn good. I’ve already convinced my boss to pony up half and payday is this Friday :-)
