BMW resurrected the spirit of its M1 with the recent unveiling of the M1 Hommage concept, and it looks as though the Bavarian supercar is once again headed to production, a new report finds. A time frame for the reborn M1 has yet to be announced, but a few other details have been revealed.
In an interview with Car magazine, BMW board member Herbert Diess revealed that the M1 Hommage concept will indeed make production. “We have the know-how, we have the right engine, we even have the infrastructure to build such a car,” he said.
Despite Diess spilling the beans to Car, the British magazine is saving the goods for its July 2008 issue. However, Car’s online site did reveal a little bit about the upcoming model.
Although the M1 Hommage concept has a strong connection to the M1 BMW produced between 1978 and 1981, the road-going version of the concept will not wear the M1 nameplate. A mid-engine setup will be part of the equation but, unlike the original, three engine choices will be available — presumably of the six, eight and ten-cylinder variety.
The production car will also sport ‘heron-wing’ doors and a driver-focused interior.
The July issue should hit newsstands in the U.S. later this week.

Now this is going to get good. First it was the RS6 vs M5 VS E- class AMG now its going to be the Audi R8 vs BMW M1 vs MB SLC. I tell ya those Germans are wacky. It almost brings me to tears.

Heard it will get the twin turbo inline 6 for a base, then the M3’s V8 and the M5’s V10, which means lots of options and a huge difference in power and price, though I would not rule out the X6’s twin turbo V8 ending up under this car.

Hmm… A V10 M1 would be delightful!!! And would probably cost an arm and a leg as well. Although with the possibility of all these optional powertrains as NoNameDenton1 says that would be cool. Even a TT I6 M1 would be pretty tight!

This is awesome news. It’s about time. BMW can’t sit out the race between the SLC and R8.
The I6, M3 V8, and M5 V10 would make sense as engine choices because that puts it at 300, 400, and 500hp repectively.
I just can’t wait to drive one.

Well remember eliteski2, the next BMW V10 grows to about 5.5 liters and gets twin turbos, and BMW also has the twin turbo 4.4 liter V8 in their arsenal to use.

^ NoName, the 4.4 TT is too pedestrian for this app. I think they’ll massage the V10 and get 600+ hp out of it. After all, it has to be their halo car

The 4.4 TT is pedestrian, you might be the only one who thinks so, since that engine can put out hp to match the V10.

Maybe so, NoName, but it doesn’t change the fact that a V8 in the halo car of a company that produces V10s and V12s sounds dowdy, especially when this stratum of exotics is littered with V12s.
As with anything, image invades the equation at these prices. Otherwise everyone with a spare million to burn would be rolling around in the 911 GT2.

There is Italian school of design related to super cars, there is Aston and here we have Chris Bangle’s down syndrome child. This is very sick looking thing.

Remember this is only the M1 concept, I’m sure the proportions will be re-worked seeing that this does look like a dump trunk was dropped on it. I don’t know how anyone can fit in this. But still awesome looking! I hope they keep the overall design.

Halo cars are a beautiful thing………… this isn’t. Are they letting their engineers choose their new designers, or what?
It was ugly the first time I saw it, and it’s just as ugly now that we hear about production plans. The other thing to consider is that with all this talk of TT V8’s, V10’s, etc., does anyone realise that CAFE will force these to be Euro only cars? There is no way BMW can keep building the cars and SUV’s they do and add a supercar to that list, and still come within an inch of the shadow of CAFE. Not even the Mini can help them here. For every M1, there must be an Isetta.

Two things to easily fix:
1. The wheels are obviously pure fantasy. They would weigh a ton each and a pebble in the road would cause a blowout. I’d sub in the wheels from the M6
2. Remove the chrome from the iconic BMW grille. I’d black it out.
If I had photoshop skills I’d make these changes. Alas, all I have is MSPaint!

I don’t know what horrors CAFE will do, but price of juice for those cars may force them to a limited quantities. Every place I consult secy’s drive BMW, unless they are hairy lesbians. Price of gas certainly will affect BMW more then Ferrari (secy’s and their significant others cant spell Ferrari – too many letters, and therefore can’t find dealer).

The turbos help the emissions and give a smaller engine the power of a larger engine without the fuel consumption issues, which is becoming more important, so we will see the 4.4 TT used more often.
