BMW chose the Chicago Auto Show to announce its re-entry into American Le Mans Series racing. The German automaker revealed a race-prepared M3 coupe, festooned with a large rear spoiler, aggressive fender flares around the wheels and a stripped interior complete with built-in roll cage. The M3’s V8 has been up-rated to 485 horsepower.
Race team owner Bobby Rahal was on hand to help announce BMW’s return to ALMS racing, which will take place for the 2009 racing season. Rahal has previously campaigned BMW racing cars in ALMS.
“We are very pleased to be returning to the American Le Mans Series with our latest generation BMW M3,” states Tom Purves, Chairman and CEO, BMW of North America.
“Sports car racing has been part of BMW of North America’s history practically from day one. Just two weeks after the company was incorporated in March 1975, a BMW CSL won the Twelve Hours of Sebring. We are confident that the fourth generation M3 will continue the legacy of its two predecessors which combined to win six manufacturer’s championships over nine seasons in US sports car racing. As it has been in the past we believe the ALMS is the ideal venue to showcase the potential of the newest BMW M3.”

I hope you continue laughing when you realize that BMW and Corvette don’t even compete in the same class of ALMS.
Morons!
Car looks great and it should do well.

I just registered on this forum to tell people that. The C6Ris a 7.0 litre V8 and runs in the GT1 class, the Bimmer will run in the GT2 class with Porsches, Ferraris, etc. etc. But this is great news for ALMS!!! The more manufacturers the better!!

Yeah, I’ve read so much stupidity on this forum (message board?) its hilarious. Its up there with Streetfire, so I thought it was time to bring some sense to you leftlaners. And I dont see the Corvette losing any time soon. They’re funded by General Motors, all the other teams in that class are privateers with not even half the budget.

Hopefully this time around Porsche wont come up with some lame excuse to get BMW baned from ALMS, when they’ll start loosing to BMW.

Porsche is full of excuses, they bitched and moaned after the 787b won LeMans in 91, and since then rotary engines have been banned for “superior weight advantage” Give me a break, LeMans is great for R&D and would have been fantastic for rotaries since they still have lots of issues to work out… But whatever, I still think LeMans is the best type of racing, so many different cars with different sounds, constant passing, its awesome watching it in person.

You’re being ignorant. The BMW doesnt even qualify in the GT1 class due to the size of the engine. I don’t remember the exact specs for GT1 class but I’m pretty sure it has to be greater than 5.5 litres. So they’re not pussying out. And I never said it was GM’s fault, I’m happy that they participate, I just wish more manufacturers would do the same. Makes a more interesting race.

While yeah it doesn’t say in the article that what class is competing in It’s pretty obvious that a 485hp BMW M3 wouldn’t be competing in GT1 class against a what 600hp Corvette C6R? It’ll be competing against 911’s and the 430’s. Heck I don’t know about ALMS but I think one of the Aston Teams is (not Prodrive) is entering a DB9R in the GT2 class.
Why is it GM’s fault that no one can compete with them and instead scurries away to the GT2 class? At least Aston Martin will be back in GT1 for 2008.
Fairlight, I think if Dodge could afford to back a factory Viper team, and use that 2000 GTS-R concept I think it’d be worthy competition to the Corvette. Although the MC12 and Saleen S7 couldn’t take it on. What I’d like to see is the Audi R8/R10 TDI compete in GT1…. Haha sucks for the GT-R that AWD cars are banned! Although it was rumored that the Corvette was going to maybe step down to GT2 if they didn’t have any competiton. I remember reading that in Autoweek.
Also welcome to LLN A True Gear Head!

Why is this being compared to the C6.R? The C6.R is in GT1, the M3 will be in GT2.
This is off the subject, but didn’t Aston Martin also come out with a V8 Vantage for GT2? I thought I heard that somewhere. It would be cool having DBR9’s in GT1 and V8 Vantages in GT2 racing together.

A true gearhead is not necessarily a smart gearhead. Now, to set a few things straight:
1 – BMW previously ran the E46 M3 GTRs in the GT class (now GT2 class), winning against Porsche before the ACO changed the GT rules. It makes sense for BMW to re-enter the same class that had previous been in. Plus, the fact that GT2 has more competition with which to prove themselves against (Porsche, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Panoz, Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet). Beating Corvette in GT1 isn’t worth much, Aston Martin and Ferrari have already done that in previous years.
2 – Porsche never complained about Mazda winning the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans, and rotaries were never banned because of the 787B’s success. The FIA’s 3.5L engine formula for the World Sportscar Championship had been announced in 1990, and was already planned to be introduced in 1992 before the 787B was even built. Mazda knew it was the last year they could use the rotaries.
Porsche was also in no position to complain as their ancient 962s had already been demoted to the lower class of the field, and they never even competed in the World Sportscar Championship in 1992 besides Le Mans, where they were only allowed in a special class for older Group C cars because they never built a 3.5L car. Peugeot, Mercedes, and Jaguar were the dominate teams of 1991 who simply could not last at Le Mans, leaving Mazda to win in the end. Mazda attempted to continue on in 1992 with a Judd V10, but the World Championship was already being cancelled at that time. By 1994, the 3.5L formula was already eliminated from Le Mans, and a 4-rotor Kudzu LMP finished 7th overall at Le Mans in 1995.

And to correct a few other points:
1 – Bell Motorsports is entering a privateer DBR9 in ALMS GT1 in 2008 to compete against Corvette Racing.
2 – Aston Martin and Prodrive have built a V8 Vantage GT2 for ALMS, to be run by Barwell-Drayson Motorsport. It has factory support, but is not a full factory squad.
3 – LG Motorsports is entering a Corvette Z06 in ALMS GT2 in 2008, with support from GM. It was a two-car program but one of Lou Giglotti’s partners backed out on the deal.
4 – The Dodge Viper Competition Coupe is under special homologation to run in the GT2 class. Primetime Race Group plans to run a full season, with some other teams doing a few races. Dodge considered factory support but that was cancelled by Cerebus.
5 – The Saleens and Maseratis have done well against the privateer Corvette C6.Rs outside of ALMS. Team Oreca’s Saleens won the (European) Le Mans Series GT1 championship in 2007, and Vitaphone Racing’s Maseratis won the FIA GT Championship. Ex-factory Corvettes run in both series.

Good news for alms…should make GT2 more interesting.
GT1 is a cool class and the cars are badass, but it’s totally uninteresting now and just a rolling marketing program until more manufacturers get involved.
Now, if only speed channel would show more GT2 footage we would be all set. IMO the programming needs to focus way more on the cars and technology. Nascar has done this well in the past couple of seasons with the cutaway cars and tech info, I’m just amazed how little they ever talk about the cars and technology in ALMS, GrandAM, etc. Most of us watch it for the cars, not the mostly unknown drivers.
PS: hey alms and grand-am: combine your series or risk becoming irrelevant and confusing like IRL and Champcar.

A True Gear Head, I would hardly consider Prodrive a privateer. I love the C6R to death (hence the screen name) but the I do believe the DBR9 beat it in either the 12hrs at Sebring or 24hrs du Mans last year, can’t remember which one.

You know I go to Sebring every year and in the program they have all the specs for every class and what it takes to qualify. I could have sworn the way the differentiate the classes was by engine size. Guess I was wrong or they changed all the rules.

C6Racer,
the Aston Martin racing team won LeMans in 2007, in unbeliavably bad weather. I’m a Aston Martin hardcore fan, but i know a better car when i see one. The Aston made a great race until it started to rain, biblical way. The Vettes, who had a very hard saturday, ran like hell during the night and early sunday morning, closing the gap on both Aston’s. Then it started to rain and before the pace car entered on the field, the remaining Vette was gaining something like 40 to 45 seconds per lap, estimating that in five to six laps they would be on Aston’s ass in a hurry. But the pace car blew the race away just 11 minutes to the end. Still, the Vantage V8 in GT2 is sure to be something very cool, in what certainly is the most challenging class in all of Le Mans Championships. Oh, and Aston won Sebring in 2005…
