It’s no secret the next BMW M5 will use a turbocharged engine — rumors have been circulating from reliable sources for months. But up until now, most of us were expecting a twin-turbo V10. Not so, according to a new report. BMW will instead use a turbo version of its new 4.4-liter V8, according to insiders.
The source told Automotive News prototypes of the engine are producing 536 horsepower. The engine will appear under the hood of the 2011 BMW M5, and will undoubtedly power the next M6 as well.
It’s possible the engine might make its debut in the 2010 BMW X6 M, but so far this is mere speculation. Our spies recently spotted a prototype for the X6 M, but what’s under the hood is not yet clear.
A spy photo showing a test mule for the 2011 M5 seems to confirm the turbo claims, as evidenced by massive air intakes.

I’m sure the twin-turbo V8 will haul ass, but I’ll miss that exotic V10 sound.
I wonder what the gas savings? 1-2 mpg?
Big disapointment and obvious money saving approach sharing the motor, instead of an exclusive dedicated motor design. Plus that motor seems tall. Not good for designers or center of gravity.
I personally believe that one turbo is enough
(-Tino has spoken-)
BMW turbos rule. The exotic F1 sound and feel will be gone, but the streetability and torque will be very welcome.
I would expect the ///M division to make it very different than the “regular” twin turbo.
If F1 goes to turbocharging again, then the car will be like an F1 engine already.
=========>>i hope they somehow get the turbocharged engine to rev around 8k rpm like the current Yamaha. Sadly with turbos, more than likely not. I’ve driven an ‘07 and it was a blast, only too bad i only got thru 4 of the 7 gears because i coudn’t open it up like i wanned coming up behind traffic….
When is audi going to answer this.
I’m not surprised - I knew they would be using a twin turbo V-8 all along. There was never a need for a twin turbo V-10.
I’m surprised BMW is willing to take a back seat to the CTS-V in power. They had better keep the weight down to be competitive with the CTS-V.
I have noticed that LLN is full of sh*t lately there news is wrong there spelling is as bad as mine. M cars do not use turbo’s there engine’s are all sopposed to be n/a that’s why the M3 is a n/a V8 instead of the twin turbo I6. Same reason the V10 was invented so they would not have to twin tubro the v8 that was in the older M5. I will sh*t a brick if there is really a twin turbo V8 in the next generation M5 2012 buy the f**king way. Member they skip a year
===>>well foster1, get your toilet paper ready….just the same as the other article sayin that Ferarri is testing turbocharged engines…
I was hoping they would put 2-3.0 sixes together to make TT straight 12. I can dream cant I.
Make your appointment with a proctologist now, foster1.
==>>LOL Z06ified
Turbo does not save fuel. It looks like the 4.4L Turbo they use in the X6 guzzles more gas the X5 w/4.8L.
I know the global warning is a serious problem, but some things should stay as they are.
Some chinese guy said that a million silver medals don’t make a gold one.
A Turbo V8 doesn’t make a V10; if that make sense.
i know just like 2 wrongs don’t make a right
but 3 lefts do, for some reason :-/
Rafa global warming (I assume you meant to type that) is not a problem, but a simple cycle the earth is undergoing. Besides, haven’t you heard it’s no longer referred to as ‘global warming’, but global climate change since so many places are seeing colder than average temperatures during their autumn and winter months.
Foster, the M cars were never suppose to way this much either, and the M3 was suppose to always have an I-6. Good luck on your asshole >.>
