@ F50, yea you’re right, I did kind of have a bit of a hypocritical moment there. I just remembered reading about the vette going through rigorous testing on the Nurburgring and threw it in for argument’s sake (Not the ZR1, but the 2004 ZO6). I wasn’t trying to seem all stirred up about it, just mostly to see what NMOFGM’s response to it would be.

NMOFGM, who said you were allowed to speak again? You’re supposed to be sitting in the corner with a Dunce cap on your head. Yep, after a better part of the century of making road boats and land yachts that handle like soggy mattresses, they’ve made the CTS-V and whatever the hell that convertible box thing… and all of the sudden they’re an American company that’s renown for performance vehicles?.. That’s just brilliant. Every time I read something you’ve written, I feel like my brain cell count is depleted more and more.

I find irony in comparing this new M5 to the CTS-V.

If anyone read Road & Track’s comparison between the two, the CTS-V lapped the most and couldn’t even make a half-second lap time difference. This being despite the fact that the M5 is down 50hp and 150lb-ft. of torque.

Just goes to show what good platform engineering can do for a car.

A4, it’s not about horsepower. Bmw always had moere interesting handling than Audi. If they put a 4wd system on the M5 and they work it the way they know, Rs6 is gone! It was the speed and the traction that it had that gave it the advantage. Now that Bmw will turn to turbocharging and if they put 4wd, what will be left for Audi?

yeah this will be sweet but it will not top the last two generations of the M5
they should have just de-bored and de-stroked the V10 as much as possible,
then added sequential or twin turbochargers, and direct injection, for better efficiency

or juiced the N54 3.0 turbo six hard….. ///M could always have rewored this motor to handle much more boost, then replaced both of the little turbochargers with significantly larger ones, or just one of them with a FAT one for much lower weight and almost as much power as the 4.4 V8 TT

As retarded as these horsepower wars are, it wouldn’t be so bad if they started shedding weight on these cars. I know they’re supposed to be luxury sedans, but I find it kind of moronic that they also want to be sporty when these cars start weighing more than 4000 pounds in dry weight alone.

And cmon, shut Audi’s mouth and have the CTS-V let go of its crown? By the time this car comes out those will both be at least 3 years old and the RS6 will still be at minimum on-par with the M5 and the CTS-V will put up just as strong of a fight. a 540hp 4.4l V8TT next to a 580hp 5.2l V10TT and a 551 or something hp 6.2l V8 supercharged? Even if the BMW puts out 555-565 with its SUV engine it’s going to have to fight pretty damn hard.

Maybe I’m getting old, but if I was going to buy another 4 door, I’m really not sure I would need to spend the extra 25 grand on an M5 over the 550i. I mean really that money could go towards a real sports car… Why have one when you can have two…? Seriously how many people are carving the mountains with the wife and two kids in the backseat. Buy a 550i, then pick up that hot new Miata lightweight concept to challenge all the Lotus Exige guys… now that would be fun to me.

you’d think that all the focus on eco-related stuff these days would tone down the horsepower wars, but the war rages on unapologetically…the ultimate engineering solution would be an engine that can burn lean when it has to, shutting off cylinders when not required for example, but has the capacity for great power and torque when required…because you don’t really need 500hp just to get to arby’s…

Your “big boys” were the ones who aspired to, and challenged the germans… hmm, where did the corvette spend an enormous amount of time reworking and tuning their suspension and aerodynamics.. oh that’s right, on the Nurburgring in Germany (with some help from the germans). Same for the CTS-V I’m pretty sure. Where is it that all these new “American Revolution” vehicles (which miraculously can actually handle) go nowadays for braggin rights.. the Nurburgring. Don’t get me wrong, I love the CTS-V and the ZR1 vette, but you have your facts backwards… BMW is the one that sets the bar for others

the back looks like the TSX. I hope it looks much better without the coverings. That rear end is WEAK for sure. even it outperforms the CTS-V (big if) its going to cost about $30k more so the Caddy still wins. BMW can build a CTS-V beater but not for less than 120% of the price of the Cadillac.

Suggestion to BMW, you should lower your expectations and compete with the Audi and Mercedes before challenging the big boys. You won’t run the risk of embarrassing yourself that way.

F50, I think the 5 series GT is the best look at the new 5-series till next year. As for the new M5, I’d rather go buy a used e34 M5.
