For much of its history, BMW's M division applied its high-performance magic only to the relatively small, lightweight models in the automaker's lineup. The creation of the X5 M and X6 M SUVs marked the end of that tradition, however, and now it seems that another large BMW may be poised to receive the M treatment.

A report published by Automobile Magazine indicates that the next-generation BMW 7-Series that is due out in 2015 will inaugurate a new performance-oriented model dubbed M770ix.

If the rumors are true, the M770ix will be powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that will churn out 475 horsepower and 480 lb-ft. of torque. That is less than the current V12-powered 760Li's power output but the M770ix will be noticeably lighter and more agile, making it a more driver-oriented sedan.

To go along with the hot-rodded engine the M770ix will feature upgraded brakes, sport seats and a specific high-flow exhaust system. The roof, the trunklid and the hood will all be made out of carbon fiber.

The development of a M-tuned 7-Series can be largely attributed to Ludwig Willisch, the CEO of BMW North America. He has been lobbying BMW's top brass for a 7-Series that is capable of competing against the Audi S8 and the AMG-badged Mercedes-Benz S-Class for quite some time.

"I think we will get it," said Willisch, who previously served as president of the M division.

What is not possible is M versions of the X1 and X3 - Willisch stated that BMW's performance arm will not follow AMG in making a performance version of every model, and the small crossovers in particular will not be offered in M form.
