BMW mulls ragtop for M3 convertible

Earlier this year, media reports indicated BMW would not build an M3 convertible because the new folding hardtop roof of the 3-Series Cabriolet made the car too top heavy. Later, spy photos refuted this, offering proof BMW was in fact testing a drop-top M3. As it turns out, there may be one more twist to the story.

A new report citing BMW insiders indicates the M Group is considering fitting the M3 convertible with a canvas roof, instead of a folding steel top. The 3-Series convertible weighs 440 pounds more than the coupe, meaning there’s a lot of room for weight reduction, according to Winding Road magazine.

An alternative proposal being considered is to stick with the folding hardtop, but replace much of the metal with carbon fiber. Of course, cost may prove to be a prohibitive factor to this idea.

I hate M convertibles, if you take the roof off a car it loses its structural integrity, don’t do it.

Madcapp, past M3s on non-RFTs have come with a tire repair kit instead of a spare and a really good roadside maintenance policy. The new M3 will probably have high performance non-RFTs & fix-a-flat kit in the trunk instead of a spare tire.

Convertibles, I typically hate them. BUT i had a RX7 convertible and it was NICE. Had a 94 mustang convertible, and that thing had CRAPPy rigidity. Now i have an 06 M roadster and i have to tell ya. Its extremely ridged taking corners faster than i have in any coupe. So i know BMW can pull it off, no question. I was thinking of replacing it w/ a M3 convertible they come out with.

i think they ought to offer another convertible version… yes its a bit less sporty, but the market gobbled all of them up last time so why not continue the trend. This car shouldve never had a folding hardtop in the first place… thats one thing they screwed up; it shouldve been ragtop from day one.

Heck, my 03 M3 convertible is 400 lbs heavier than the 03 M3 coupe, so what if the new V8 M3 is 440 heavier than the coupe!

don’t Bmw have that special gell in the tyres so when you pierce a tyre the gell inside quickly covers the hole and u have another 1200 km or so before you have to replace it.

convertibles kick-ass… it let’s you connect with nature while driving your vehicle… it’s a great feeling. However, it’s not for pussies, you’ve got to love driving. Hence, I’ve owned Boxters, Miatas and 3-series convertibles.

While i dont like ragtop convertibles CC are quite nice. My mother owns a peugot 206cc one of the first mass market CCs (coupe cabriolet) the roof is very nice. it allows you to keep it closed and make you feel like you are in a coupe or open it and feel like you are in convertible. and theres nothing greater than driving around in the winter top down heating up and havng everyone stare at you, and ask u if ur cold at the lights. The nice thing bout CCs is that they let you be cocuned whn u want to be and exposed when u want to be.

megator is correct… in fact, for added value, I recommend a wind deflector screen, the windows us, the heater (and heated seats) at full power…and playing (quite loudly) “Let It Snow”, but only Frank Sinatra’s rendition of it.

i would never own the convertible version of the M3 but many people would, and BMW would be allowed to cahrge a fortune doing it so more power to them. I want them to carbon fiber the roof of the coupe. Now that would be sweet. P.S. bring back the E46

BMW are very clever with ths. However, weather protection, and handling (never a BMW issue) will be affected with no roof. BMW currently makes two soft tops: the M6 cabriolet, and of course, the 6 Series. The M3 will have less power than the M6, and since the M6 has great handling with over 500bhp, the M3 should be very good. However, a canvas hood can easily be cut and broken into.

Past M3 convertibles were fine with their soft tops (I know that the E36 was available as ragtop, and the E30 was available M# ragtop in Europe). So, with this in mind, it’s not like they have not done it before. Sure, it will not have the performance of the coupe, but it’ll still be a rocket and my insurance company will still take me to the cleaners for it.

My 04 M3 Convertible doesn’t mind “HIS” brother the E39 M5 living next to him.

The car does not flex and from a roll the coupe cannot pull on the convertible. Carbon Fiber would be nice but way too costly. Although it would be nice to see a lightweight retractable hardtop I can definately live with a very well insulated ragtop currently fitted to my M3.

The comment that convertibles are for women or “p”’s. I guess you wouldn’t take a Ferrari or Porsche TT ragtop? Probably not since you got such “M.A.N” in ya.

Give it a rest. If you don’t own one don’t stand on the sidelines and scream like a girl trying to be heard.
