On Thursday, images leaked onto the Web of what was claimed to be BMW ’s forthcoming Vision Z Concept, hiding under a thin semitransparent cover while being loaded onto a truck. According to BMW, the car is not the Vision Z planned for the Frankfurt auto show, but rather another concept of unspecified identity.
One rumor is that the mystery car is a preview of the next-generation 6-Series. (As rumored over the past two years, the new 6er will be offered in three variants: a two-door coupe, a two-door convertible, and a four-door grand tourer). Other speculation suggests this might be a ‘GT’ version of the next-generation 3-Series, similar to the 5-Series GT hatchback.
In any case, illustrator Jon Sibal put together a rendering of what the car might look like without the tarp.
Meanwhile, details of the ‘real’ Vision Z remain a mystery. The car will showcase BMW ’s latest and greatest energy efficiency technologies. BMW previously announced the new ‘EfficientDynamics’ show car would arrive in Frankfurt, describing it as a “green” sports car.
“Sustainability is becoming increasingly important,” said BMW board member Klaus Draeger in a speech last month. “You will see a product of sustainable development at the IAA in Frankfurt in a few weeks in the form of a concept car. The BMW EfficientDynamics Vision will demonstrate how efficient a sports car can be. It will also prove that sustainability does not apply to the drivetrain alone, but to design and materials as well.”
