BMW has announced that it will offer performance parts to enhance the acceleration, braking and handling of its cars — all backed by BMW’s factory warranty. The performance parts will be initially offered on BMW’s 3-series — excluding 335 models — and Z4 models and can be retrofitted to many previous-generation cars.
Some of the performance parts available include a new exhaust system, a shift kit offering 25% shorter throws, carbon fiber or aluminum strut braces, a new differential which improves acceleration by a half second and an engine kit for 2004-2006 3.0L models that uses new camshafts and a modified ECU to boost output to 235 horsepower and 222 lb-ft of torque.
The performance parts are available now at BMW dealers nationwide.

Who would notice increase in horsepower from 210-215 HP to 235? This is roughly equivalent of getting 3 series from top speed of 135-145 mph to 140-150. Does anyone in states has an ability to do this? And somebody does have such resources, they probably would not be waisted on 3 series in the first place.
Furthermore, I just don’t see BMW and especially 3 series clientèle going through process of parts selection and installation. Most of them leased in the first place.

I think I rather get 335, if I have a $ to upgrade 325 to perform better. I feel like I got screwed after getting ‘06 330i when BMW offered ‘07 335i for similiar price. those marketing bastards @ BMW…

Autonut, you don’t think you would notice a 20HP increase and a 37lb/ft increase in torque???

The parts will be grossly overpriced. I bet the carbon fiber strut brace will list for no less than $500.

Seems like BMW is perhaps making a move to perhaps split ways with Dinan? The cams and diff are most likely just OEM parts from other 3-series variants that are retrofitted to increase performance. For example, the diff just increases acceleration due to adjusting the final gearing (diff swaps are a a popular mod among the e36/e46 community because automatic tranny bimmers come with a higher final drive ratio than manual bimmers, often referred to as the “poor man’s supercharger” because it really does offer a big increase in performance and it’s rather cheap to do lol).
And in response to autonuts, there is a huge BMW enthusiast community that is comprised of real performance minded modders who actually use the car to its full potential and want to expand on it…unlike the boring soccer moms and dads who bought it because of the badge.

driver54, I am pretty sure that 70-80% of 3 series are automatic transmissions. I doubt that you can actually notice it with slash box. The remaining manuals have to be driven at really high speed to realize HP improvements or with a stop watch to see how much faster it will get to 60 mph with extra torque.
Of course the guy who will go through trouble of installing and paying for those goods will feel the difference. But power of faith is well known: there are tons of TV evangelists who speak to God on regular basis, and as trusty soul I think THEY do believe in those conversations.

I wonder if the reason BMW isnt offering enhanced parts for the 335 is because they are worried it would cannibalize M3 sales. A warranty covered ECU chip, larger brakes, strut braces and differentials could bump a 335 to great heights & make people think twice about spending a premium for an M3.

Good question futurezero. I hope Dinan prices are more competitive in the future. But i am sure they will (and they already have started) to fill in the 335 void as well.

Currently if you get Dinan parts through your BMW dealer you are not voiding your warranty under the mods clause. If BMW & Dinan part ways Dinan will have to come down in price since it will become a mod that voids part of the BMW warranty.

Htay, aftermarket parts for BMWs is a profitable business. There are many companies that make parts for bimmers. Recently only Dinan has approved aftermarket parts that wont void part of a BMW warranty. That doesnt stop other quality manufacturers from producing parts. The better aftermarket companies have their own warranties that cover the parts which are voided by BMW when modified.
If you care, BMW cars are bimmers and BMW motorcycles are beemers. cheers.

with $3,000 in mods you have around 400 hp to the wheels and tons of fkn torque, the car is great.

How about offering a BMW that doesn’t put owners in the poor farm in repairs? That’d be something different for once.

GM_SALES, Edmunds Total Cost of Ownership over 5 years puts the maintenance and repair costs of a 5 series at $5956 and a CTS at $6451. So the GM car costs more to maintain and repair over 5 years than the BMW. As for depreciation, BMW holds its value well since the demand for used BMWs remains high. GM cars on the other hand have some of the worst depreciation numbers on Edmunds. Buy a GM car and its value drops like a rock. Thats because no one wants a used GM vehicle, they barely want a new GM vehicle.
A quality car is why BMW is one of the most profitable auto companies with loyal return customers and GM can barely keep from going into bankruptcy while having to offer huge incentives to keep the few customers they have left. It sucks when real numbers and facts burst the fanatical GM garbage you spew in every comment.

Big deal. How about the unscheduled maintainence that goes with the BMW experience huh? That should put people in the poor farm. GO to any BMW dealership, their service bays are loaded with lemons or cars that have been in the shop for the umpteenth time. Cadillac dealers are like ghost towns, their service bays are always empty or they have cars in for routine service. Bam, their owner drives off just as happy as they day they bought it. Like a good American, they are rewarded with exceptional service from their Cadillac.
That is the difference between buying American and settling for German garbage liek the rest of the posuers. Get with the program or expect the consequences.

4 years maintenance program covers any scheduled maintenance and the 4 year warranty covers any other breakdowns. Total cost of ownership for a BMW in the first 4 years is $0 (not including gas).
The reason BMW dealerships are full is there are so few dealerships compared to the many GM dealerships. BMWs are very popular so there are many owners in for routine maintenance at the few dealerships in town. BMW is smart enough to figure out the perfect balance of dealerships to owners.
Meanwhile there are many GM dealerships and no owners to use the service bays because the incentives arent big enough to get anyone to buy a Caddy. Who wants a Caddy that will loose half its value in the first year of ownership? GM is loosing money paying for dealerships and service techs for auto brands that arent selling any cars.
Guess that is another reason BMW is profitable and GM is barely staying alive while they beg the Governemnet for help.

Dont be mad at me everyone. I am just in denial. Everyone knows BMWs are better than General Morons cars. BMWs hold their value better, drive better and are built better. I need to make up foolish arguments to make myself feel better about the junk I am forced to sell at my GM dealership. Luckily there arent many customers at our dealership so I have all this time to spend on LLN posting pro-GM rhetoric.

oh my gosh, I almost thought for a second GM sales finally was talking truth, then I noticed it was a different person entirely, too bad. As for maintaining a BMW, I have owned two new BMW, 1 current, and between the two I have spent a grand total of……..NOTHING to maintain my car, including brakes and oil changes. And this isn’t on a baseline 3 series, both on M3’s. When they had the Rod bearing recall I brought mine in and had it done, guess what instead of a non-M vehicle loaner that I would have been stuck with for a week, they gave me and M5. Unscheduled maintenance is covered under the warranty, which my dealer extended to 100k for free because my family does alot of business with them. My dad had a 540i that a tech crashed during road testing, instead of giving him the run-around, they gave him a brand new one (his had 8000 miles) that day and said they’d take car of switching all the paperwork, all he had to do is sign a few things and he was on his way in a new car in the same amount of time it would have taken to pick up his car if there was no accident. BMW ownership is very satisfying and GM_sales will never understand that because he is too arrogant (notice I didn’t say ignorant) and broke to ever think about buying a BMW. Of the many different cars I’ve owned I have NEVER been more satisfied than with BMW. But I have to say, if they make these performance add-ons cheaper than Dinan then they will do very well (I never liked Dinan, too expensive for not enough performance)
