BMW officially announces new N54 Turbo Engine

BMW today released new details on its much-rumored N54 Bi-Turbo Engine. The motor is expected to appear in the 2007 BMW 335i and 2007 BMW 335ci (coupe). The engine has an output of 306 horsepower and maximum torque of 295 lbs.-ft (400 Nm). BMW said it has already tested a 3-Series sedan with the engine, and achieved a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds. BMW said the engine is relatively lightweight — about 70kg less than its 4.0-liter V8 engine. According to the automaker, the 3.0-liter engine has little or no turbo lag, thanks to two small turbos instead of one large one. Maximum torque is achieved between 1500 and 5800 rpm. What we know so far: BMW will show its new E92 3-Series coupe at the Geneva Motor Show along with this new engine. What’s no entirely clear is whether this engine will make it to North America. Recent rumors suggested this turbo engine would be exclusive to Europe, and a different naturally-aspirated powerplant would drive the 335 in North America.

Then why is the lexus 0-60 in 5.3? Can’t bmw make something relatively cheap that can match that?

Just because this post is gonna attract alot of BMW people…anyone hear if BMW is gonna use Borg Warners Dualtronic (twin clutch torqueconverterless automatic transmission) that VW uses? VW calls it a DSG transmission. Borg Warner signed a contract with 2 unnamed european partners last summer, I’m hoping that this technology shows up in BMWs soon.

Uhhhhhh……Anonymous, maybe the BMW is heavier, maybe it has a lower grade tire, maybe it is not as aerodynamic, who knows. The horsepower can be the same on any two cars and one will always be faster.

this should be the perfect car for the modding crowds. twin turbos should be easy to squeez out at least 450hp outta this baby with a few mods.

Awesome! The spirit of twin-turbo inline-6 lives on!

The last that I could remember was the Supra 2JZ-GTE, while the Skyline GT-R never made it here. This new N54 will be much lighter than any of them.

It would be absolutely amazing if BMW does not send this motor to the states with the tuner market that is here. Any flunky knows that an engine like this is what every German car enthusiast has been waiting for. We have been trying to turbo NA BMW engines all drooling over the thought of a low compression turbo built German engine to come about on the production line. Just the thought of adding boost to the stockers for an easy 450+hp or replacing with an aftermarket single turbo kit making over 700whp with the stock longblock! Oh my God it better come to the US now!

BMW will be using the dual clutch Borg Warner transmission and they will be calling it the ZSG. It may show up as the automatic gearbox for the E92 (the new 3 series coupe) which will be officially shown at the Geneva auto show.

Anonymous, Japanese HP numbers and 0-60 times are always exaggerated. Tests show Lexus/Acura have less HP and slower 0-60 than they promise. German makers are the opposite. They always report lower HP than what is achieved during independent tests and they have accurate 0-60 scores.

The guy that posted the 0-60 time for the IS350 is 5.3 seconds is wrong. The Lexus IS350 brochure states 0-60 is 5.6 seconds. BMW has everything right except for one thing. Reliability. It would be nice to open up a Consumers Digest and see more full red circles next to the BMW’s just like Lexus has.

I hate to say that BMW’s reliability is not as bad as what is been portrayed, and neither is Lexus stellar reliability as stellar as what is promoted. There are also complains from Lexus owners complaining of drive-train malfunction to electronics.My friend just bought an IS350, and after 800+ miles, he is having problem with the drive train, so the issue with defects is across the board. These car manufacturres get parts from vendors and use almost the same statistical quality control mechanisms.

BMW has always stuck to NA, why change now? why not just drop the 3.5 V8 in it? they may aswell change the C-pillar to a normal shape and get rid of the kidney grille while they’re at it

Getting some 700 BHP from this engine by using a single turbo-kit would go against the engines construction from the very beginning. They just wouldn’t build an engine capable of that much BHP!
You would have to change everthing in it and then buying a SC’d V8 and putting in it would be cheaper.
Sherv: BMW haven’t always hade N/A-engines but the last one was the 2002 turbo.
The 3.5 V8 was taken out of production years ago when the face-lifted the E39.

Japanese manufacturers have always stated the BHP on the shy side with the example of the R34 GT-R producing near 320-330 when people have had them dynoed.
German/European manufacturers differ from understating the power to grossly overstating it with the example of the VW W8 said to produce 275 but only managed 230.

I think it’s great that BMW have built a small engine with the power and the charactere of a bigger engine with more cylinders.

BMW stayed away from Turbo for long time because they don’t like the Turbo lag..
and this turbo doesn’t lag!!!!

This thing is dissapointing. Look at the old M3 engine putting out 333hp, or a 2litre turbo Mitsubishi putting out just as much torque and hp. The manifolds are pitiful, esp compared to the beautiful headers on the M5 engine, the intercooler is a terrible design. And anyone who knows anything about turbos knows that one large turbo is better than two small ones. Plus less moving parts is always a good idea.

But the aftermarket for this should be sweet. A boost controler, hard intake pip, better turbo manifold/headers, that car will fly…

Joe Sedlar, what are you talking about? Two turbos are always better than one for a street vehicle. A smaller one that spools up fast for torque and to eliminate lag – and a larger one for horsepower and top end. This engine is ripe for mods…

No, two turbos usually are not better than one. There are exceptions but usually its not worth the money and effort two install two turbos when you can get the same amount of power from a single one. There are turbos now that have almost NO turbo lag while still putting up impressive numbers. The Garrett GT28 turbo for instance. The more moving parts there are the more problems may arise.

I think BMW did good though with this engine and hopefully it will make it stateside. Any one know what engine it was based of. An M54 maybe?

85 745i turbo

the good ol e23 745i is a monster. flash the chip, wastegate mod, cartech adjustab;e rising rate fuel pressure regulator running about 91psi at 16psi of boost and you have about 399hp to the rear wheels and 496 lb/ft torque at the rear wheels. I have owned 2 745i’s (84 and up had a 3.4l) and while the stock hp rating was 252 hp many owners get about 220-225 at the wheels with the automatic. I am now purchasing one with the full team 745i upgrade. My last one running about 11psi was insanely fast especially on the freeway where I could toast just about anything including my buddies 03 mustang gt with larger throttle body and exhaust upgrades, and my supervisors 92 vette. way to go BMW for bringing another turbo (the only one for the U.S., as the 745i was never offered here in the states unless you had one brought under the grey market).
