BMW produces 5,000,000th 5-series

01/30/2008, 3:37 PM

By Drew Johnson

BMW reached a major milestone yesterday, producing its 5,000,000th 5-series at its Dingolfing plant. The 5,000,000th 5-series was a Carbon Black Metallic — although it looks blue in the picture — 530d sedan.

The original 1972 E12 5-series was based on the 1970 BMW Garmisch 2002ti concept, designed by Marcello Gandini and shown at the Geneva Motor Show.

The fifth-generation 5-series has come a long way since the first-generation’s range of four and six-cylinder engines. Whereas the top engine offered in the E12 5-series was a 218 horsepower six-cylinder, the current E60 car can be equipped with a 500 horsepower V10.

I like the older 5 series among many other beemers but, the current model is the most ugliest one to date.

hated them at first, but the 5-series has really grown on me, probably just in time for them to re-design it lol

5 million of a high end sport/luxury car: that’s a big number. I hate to bring this back to the dimwits at Detroit, but look what can happen when you spend decades refining the same model, building customer loyalty, not changing the model name every time you change the sheetmetal etc, etc, etc…

TO e36m. The e39 is very good but e60 is way better. Ugly but very good to drive.

Gorgeous, especially in that color. That car is a stunner.

johnnycanuck: 5-series, a sports car? Hardly, try GT.

Sorry, WEKS. Unfortunately, my subscription to ‘Pompous Ass’ has expired so I’m at a bit of a loss right now.
