BMW readying M Sport package for X6

07/09/2009, 8:52 AM

By Drew Johnson

For those without the extra cash to fully upgrade to the X6 M, BMW is readying a new M Sport package for the big crossover. Following in the footsteps of the recently announced M Sport package for the 7-Series, the X6 M Sport will add plenty of visual upgrades, but will also include a healthy dose of power.

The M Sport package will be available on X6 xDrive35d and X6 xDrive50i models, adding power and visual flair to both. The oil-burning version of the X6 will see a 20 horsepower boost – up to 306 horsepower – thanks to the use of the same diesel engine found in the new BMW 740d. The gas X6 will wring out an extra 42 horsepower from its twin-turbo V8, checking in with a rather stout 442 horsepower. Torque for both engines is also said to be up, but no official figures are in as of yet.

Visually, the X6’s M Sport package will include a unique body kit and 20 inch wheels. The body kit should be enough to differentiate the M Sport X6 models from the standard car, but will steer clear of the X6 M’s body work. Other interior touches will likely include an M steering wheel, an M shifter and plenty of carbon fiber trim bits.

Pricing has yet to be released for the X6 M Sport package, but look for the accessories to hit BMW dealers by the end of the year.

I can’t think of a better way to broadcast your assholiness than by driving an X6 M.

BMW must cater to the swiss cheese theory of product planning. If you put enough slices on top of each other eventually you’ll cover all the holes.

johnnycanuck – LOL thats a pretty accurate theory. I think MB is using the same approach. Sad to see the M badge being so diluted these days

i saw an x6 last week and it looked real weird…just out of proportion with everything around it…but that aspect will probably attract a subset of buyers…brand and shape exclusivity, maybe, who knows…it’s not my cup of tea, tho, for sure…

Actually, putting extra power in a “M package” is rather new! That won’t stop the car looking even more POS though…

only 442hp! i saw this at another site two monts ago, they said 555 for the X5 and X6 m’s. Guess that was just hype. Seriously, though, who needs 442hp for grocery runs.

@ reedfast , X5M and X6M have 555 hp. the normal X6 V8 with the optional M Sport package will have 442 hp.
