A newly released
recall by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) potentially involves 2,642 BMW X5s covering model year 2012 and 2013 along with 2013
BMW X6 crossovers. There is a potential for a fire, as the steering gear surface may not have been properly machined and could lead to power steering leak onto the exhaust manifold.
BMW will issue notices to owners starting in July, urging them to visit their local dealers for a free repair. The 2012 X5 vehicles are only ones with the 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline six, while the potentially affected 2013s have the gas engines only.
Upon inspection, dealers will replace the steering gear if it's found to be defective.
Earlier this year, the X5 and X6 also
faced a recall, this one due to emissions control systems that failed to meet U.S. and California emission standards.
