BMW has announced a recall to a small number of 2012 X5 xDrive35i models to address a big automatic transmission problem.
Though only six X5s are affected by the recall, each will need to have its transmission replaced due to a manufacturing error that could prevent the engagement of the parking lock even when the gearbox has been shifted into “park.” Unless the parking brake is engaged, the X5s are at risk of rolling away.
The six X5s in question were built from December 19, 2011 to December 21, 2011. The recall is set to begin later this month, and BMW dealers will replace the transmission free of charge.
“You may continue to drive your vehicle, but when parking and before leaving your vehicle, please make sure that the park position ‘P’ is engaged AND the parking brake is engaged,” BMW said in a letter to owners.
BMW is not aware of any injuries or deaths stemming from the transmission defect.
