BMW revamps iPod connectivity for advanced navigation

04/12/2006, 3:53 PM

By admin

BMW today announced the debut of a new iPod interface that will enable tighter integration of the iPod for the newest generation of BMW models. The new system provides direct access to playlists, artists, albums, podcasts, and genre via the car’s interface. The new BMW Interface for iPod will be available for owners of the new BMW 3-, 5-, 6-, and 7-Series. It will also be available for the new M5 Sedan and M6 Coupe. The new Interface is compatible with all iPods with a dock connector, including the iPod nano and the fifth generation iPod. The BMW iPod Interfaces integrate the iPod through a direct connection in the glovebox.

Tricky wording; is this to say that if you have iDrive you can do this? And would this work on the first gen iDrive systems?

I knew this would come sooner or later. There was something fishy about having an iPod integration kit on the E46 (’99-’05 3-Series) and then discontinuing it for the E90 (’06 3-Series). As for the system, will you be able to scroll through using the iDrive knob AND the steering wheel controls? Personally, I’d prefer the latter. And will it show album art :) ?

That’s it. Officially I call an end to all the whining about iDrive. Although, now I will begin a rant about how if BMW can do this, then why not put a 60GB hard drive in the vehicle with WiFi and let me synchronize my iTunes while the car sits in the driveway?

Because not everyone’s car sits right outside their window and I personally wouldn’t want my car exposed to hackers and wardivers.

hackers and wardrivers? you only sync it to the 60 gig drive, then you are done with it on the road.

And what about BMW motorcycle they are still proposing an expensive Radio/CD (1200 euros) which doesn’t even read mp3s

Does anyone have a part number for this? 2006 330i w/ nav, according to BMW dealers, has no capability for iPod integration. Obviously this article sheds some light…

I am waiting to hear a more concrete answer to this one. I am about to buy a 06 330i with the idrive nav and satellite radio. According to the dealership, the satellite radio will interface w/ the nav. but ipod is not available. Will this new integration allow for both or one or the other(sat. and ipod?) fingers crossed

Put Frankie back on the bus to Hell and pick something good to listen to. Crystal Method’s ‘Get Salty’ for example. Blow out your ears to that.
