BMW shifts Z4, X3 production

08/17/2007, 8:48 AM

By Drew Johnson

Since its introduction in 1996, BMW has built the Z-series at the company’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant. However, the next-generation model will shift production to Regensburg, Germany.

BMW is making the switch in order to accommodate X3 production, as well as the upcoming X6, at the South Carolina plant. The X3 is currently manufactured in Austria. As a result, capacity in Spartanburg is being increased from 140,000 to 200,000 units annually. North America is BMW’s largest SUV market.

That’s an intelligent move, having production shifted from a factory overseas to one that’s in the homeland of which you sell most of your vehicles. But is it really news?

The article failed to mention or predict for which model year this might occur. Does the new Z4 debut for MY2009? 2010?
