cant agree gm sales, i have a regular 525i in my driveway and it is just unbeleviable to drive, i test drove an sts before the cts and there is no comparison, sts is a good car but the 525 is a gret car. if you cant afford the bmw then the cts is a good choice but not the sts, the sts is a bloated heavy(smooth for sure)german car imposter, the m5 is even better.

The M5 still pales in comparison to the Cadillac STS. Most fans here would agree BMW's are overrated junk just waiting to break down and break the bank.

I have driven the previous M5 model a few times, it is without a doubt a great car, but while I can't really say how overrated the M5 is or not, I can say it is definitely overpriced.

Obviously CTS, those who think the M5 is over rated have probably never driven an M car, let alone the beast that is the M5. I haven't driven the new one, or the M6 but I've driven the E28, E34 and E39 models, as well as E30, E36 and E46 M3s. To say they're great cars would be a 'great' understatement.

What really pisses me off is the attitude of some people who post on this site. They read about, or drive one car, love it to death and then say all the other cars they haven't driven are rubbish. Real car enthusiasts realise that there are lots of incredible cars in the world. What you do is take your pick, buy it if you can and respect the other guys choice. If you want bragging rights, take it to the track... and even then it'll be driver against driver. Put a ham fisted moron in an M5 and he'll either crash it or end up driving it like my Grandma.

Opinions are opinions, facts are facts. Don't confuse the two. Sorry, didn't mean to rant.

W1ck3D: That's really my opinion on the matter, I can, like any able minded car fan, readily admit the Corvette Z06, the Ford GT, the Dodge Viper, the Shelby GT500, etc, are quality, no compromises sports cars, but those are 4 vehicles, and I had to think about it to come up with the Shelby for another domestic American supercar. Reality hurts, and as you say, most US autos in this field aren't much of a comparison for the euro offerings. Cadillac STS-V? That's what GM came up with to battle the BMW M5? That's starting yourself out fighting an uphill battle, granted, the STS-V is a great car if driven alone, but if you've driven an M5 you know what's up. Overall good post on the matter, I agree with you on that one, to insult BMW's engines, especially the M5's, and tote domestic automakers as making superiors products in these categories, is pure insanity.

The international engine of the year awards? Where the hell did this come from? Funny, never heard anything about them up until this point. As far as BMW basicly winning everything, I guess that's cool. Hard to argue their engineering excellence. Would've liked to see the Z06 engine on there though... And how's about that 2.0 liter turbo in the Redline Sky, with 260 hp. I wonder who did the voting?

LOL, the European vs American carfans are at it again.

Honestly, I was driving behind a BMW M5 few weeks ago on the infamous Nürburgring/Nordschleife in a Porsche 996 GT3. Trust me on this one, it's a challenge to pass it as the acceleration is very good, the handling in the very nasty curves tops most of it's competitors and the engine just seems to handle it all without a problem. After that weekend my respect for the BMW M5 multiplied by a thousand!

I see a lot of guys discussing the cars, but I want to ask you something: have you ever driven these cars on the edge?

For the Carrera GT, 996 GT3RS, Cayman S, Lamborghini Gallardo SE, CLK DTM and Honda S2000 I have and I can tell you: they kick ass!

Most of the American cars are not much of a competition to the European once. But I have to be honest and admit that the Corvette C06 is a very good car and the Ford GT looks stunning (although drives not that easy as I've been in one during Gumball2006).

Have you driven the 335i? Have you driven the M6? If you had, you would have no problem with these awards. Considering your ID name, and your comments, you're about as unobjective as they come..I lost brain cells reading your retarded post so try and hold back next time you have the urge to write something here

While the Nissan engines are pretty damn good performance-wise, they suck gas like there's no tomorrow and that hardly constitutes as definitive winners when compared to the Bimmers. They are certainly better than GM's overweight garbage though.

Sorry to disappoint you Ray, Nissans VQ engine is a lemon from the get go. Nissan managed to pull the wool over your eyes and convince you clowns that the engine is built for performance. Bull. The same engine powers everything from the 350Z to the Pathfinder SUV and Frontier pickup. How is that considered a performance motor?

You want performance, look no further than the GM 3.6Di, the LS and the Vortec motors. Those should have ruled this phony list, not a bunch of German garbage. Had this poll been taken by legitimate people, the list would have been much more believable. Right now it's just trash written to make the foriegn crap look good. Just more anti-GM propoganda.

As far as I'm concerned, these awards are meaningless. Two engines that should be there are Nissan's VQ and GM's LS series engines. Didn't BMW have issues recently where they had to completely overhaul engines in the M Series cars because they were breaking ?

People credit Ghosn with bringing Nissan back. That may be. It certainly doesn't hurt that you can now get the VQ in just about every car that Nissan / Infiniti makes. As far as GM's engine, the Corvette's engine has always brought exceptional gas mileage to a package that has been known to keep up with sports cars that are much pricier... think what you all want about these awards, you won't convince me any...I believe they are totally bullshit.

The judging pool does seem incomplete, and the categories need to be mutually exclusive (since 1.0 is not less than 1.0, etc, etc.) If I was judging, I still would have picked BMW engines for most categories. In hp, tq, emisions, & fuel consumption to size, BMW is superior in a lot of categories.
About GM's new direct engine 3.6L for the CTS (V-series was saying) - since it will first go in a 2008 model, I'm guessing it wont be a nominee until next year. If I could pick any GM engine, it would be that one.
(Or maybe it's not there because it is an undercover Euro Engine of the Year awards.)

Interesting that no US engines were nominated in any of the categories, and that many of the engines that won aren't even available in the US (BMW 2.5 liter, Toyota 1-liter, VW 1.4 liter). I'm not saying the results are inaccurate, just that the judging pool seems incomplete.

Wow, that wasn't biased. What idiotic awards! BMW and toyota got almost every award and they both suck. The synergy drive got an award?! It only gets like 35mpg for all that expense and lack of power. The BMW tt I6 got an award?! it's extremely expensive and with all that turbo only 300hp? What about the direct-injected 3.6 engine GM has in the new CTS. Same hp with better fuel economy, reliability, and price. And I didn't see the 2.0l turbo direct-injected ecotec I4 in there (solstice gxp). That's a great engine with great power and economy. These awards sound like a big sham to me. Just a bunch of foreign-biased homos.

The 325 in europe gets a 2.5L engine, so its referring to the 2.5 in europe, not america

The M5/M6 have definitely the best engines out there before you hit the "exotic" cars. Which makes me wonder whether this award includes ALL car manufacturers or only major brands. My vote would go to the new Ferrari V8 engines that power the F430. Thing of beauty!

Yup, the engine powering all e90 325i/328i are 3.0L engines, but then again these people classify the 1.3L Renisis as a 3.0L.

According to my R&T, the engine in the BMW 325i and 525i is actually a detuned engine displacing 3 liters. Obviously someone didn't read the specs very closely.

I certainly agree with the award selections. BMW makes hands down, the best engines out there short of exotic cars. The twin turbo I6 in simply unbelievable, if you haven't driven a 335i yet, get out there and test drive one, pretty incredible.

bamf, the bugatti engine isnt really too efficient, it dont belong in this list, its definately powerful but it is still 2 w8`s on a common crankshaft.
is there something wrong with me, i agree with homeboy234 again. GM doesnt really have an engine worth the list, other than the northstar gm needs to rethink their v8 direction. or at least offer another smaller lighter overhead cam v8 ( i do like the 4.4 northstar)for chevy and pontiac.
