The BMW X5 was a rather controversial vehicle when it first launched in 1999 – after all, it was the sports car company’s first SUV – but the German automaker clearly knew what it was doing as the X5 has just tallied its 1 millionth sale.

In just 11 years, BMW’s X5 Sports Activity Vehicle has managed to rack up 1 million sales. The milestone-marking vehicle – produced at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina plant — was a sapphire black metallic BMW X5 xDrive35i featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim.

Appropriately showing the changing winds in the auto industry, the 1 millionth X5 is current on its way to an awaiting customer in China.

The X5 was the first vehicle designed around BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle concept, which has since been expanded to include the X3 and X6. Produced exclusively at BMW’s Spartanburg plant, the X5 is exported to more than 120 countries.
