BMW to bring diesels to U.S.

10/03/2007, 7:47 AM

By Drew Johnson

BMW has announced that it will bring its 3.0L twin-turbo diesel engine to the U.S. The engine — which features variable twin-turbo technology — is currently available in many of BMW’s European vehicles. BMW recently previewed the engine in its 3, 5 and 6-series cars, although the automaker has yet to confirm which models will get the diesel and how much the diesel option will cost.

According to the editor of Roundel, Satch Carlson, the 3 and 5-series are the most likely candidates to receive the diesel option.

In Europe, the 335d produces 286 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque, while still achieving a combined cycle of 35 mpg. In comparison, a 335i produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque with a combined cycle of 20 mpg.

BMW failed to give a time frame for a U.S. diesel introduction, although it is believed the diesel will bow in the latter part of next year.

According to Wards Auto, diesels account for 67% of BMW’s European sales.

I just wish they had a manual transmission for their diesels. That would be an amazing car to own.

SUV’s should by their nauture, diesel powered cars, only that you never cared much about fuel consumption, because fuel is much cheaper on your side of the pond. In most euro countries, for example, you only get diesel Land Rovers, gas variants are usally in order only.

Diesels and Ethanlol won’t solve any of the resource problems here. We need a better alternative. But I guess we’ll have to go through 10 years of people buying this crap and the government giving millions away in incentives and subsidies to realize it was a mistake.

If I were to buy a new SUV, and if I had the money, I would get the X5 3.0sd, which features the 286hp V6 diesel engine. Far better than Audi’s 233hp diesel in the Q7 and Merc’s ML 320CDI with 224hp.

More diesels are needed. especially if we can make it from renewable sources. Switchgrass and such.

Sweet! I may have to buy one of these. A 335d would be a nice fun commuter car. Now I’ll have to decide between a 2009 CTS-V or a 2009 335d (different animals, I know, but I like both for different reasons).

Heresy Z06ified – I thought you were a GM guy.
The 335d is compelling though. MB, Audi abd Infiniti better get their competitors ready. Lexus probably won’t bring a diesel. They’ll cram a hybrid IS-f down our throats first.

good luck with you conversion. First of all it wont work (too uch electronics on modern engine, second of all even if it would work it’ll cost you a pretty penny, so it wont be financialy viable.

Same engine is available in X3 in Europe and soon will be available in their X5.
UK figures are: (source: BMW Car Magazine)
335d Sedan: 37.7mpg, 0-62mph – 6.2 sec, top speed (limited!) 155mph
535d Sedan: 41.5mpg (don’t ask me how heavier 5-er can post better figures), 0-62 – 6.4 sec, top speed 155mph, again limited.
After re-chip by DMS Automotive in 535d 0-60mph – 5.5sec, “Some clever remapping by DMS liberates 344bhp at 4200rpm and a faintly ludicrous 506lb ft at 2570rpm, all for just £999″ (Source: http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/56346/bmw_5series.html) Thats same time as 335i Coupe and 0.1 sec faster then 335i Sedan!

BMW always had the better handling and engine output, with more mpg it’d be the ultimate driving machine indeed. Now, if they can only use more sumptuous interior materials…

If there is one oil burner engine to bring over to you and show you what a real diesel can do it might as well be this one!
There is also a reason why this is an auto – it has lots of torque! I’ve not driven this engine in the 3 series, but have driven the 5 series touring with it, which was absolutely awesome.
Gobsmackingly good – and this from someone who doesn’t usually go for BMW’s.
