BMW to debut “green” sports car concept at Frankfurt

07/29/2009, 4:53 PM

By Andrew Ganz

Confirming earlier reports, BMW will take the stage in its home country with a high-efficiency sports car concept set to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Though few details are known, the model could be based on the now-defunct M1 Homage concept car (pictured) unveiled last year at the Villa d’Este Concours in Italy.

“Sustainability is becoming increasingly important,” said BMW board member Klaus Draeger in a speech. “You will see a product of sustainable development at the IAA (International Auto Show) in Frankfurt in a few weeks in the form of a concept car. The BMW EfficientDynamics Vision will demonstrate how efficient a sports car can be. It will also prove that sustainability does not apply to the drivetrain alone, but to design and materials as well.”

The sports car is expected to be a two-seat, mid-engined coupe with eco-friendly features gleaned from BMW’s EfficientDynamics engineering program. Whether the car will be electric, hybrid or diesel is up in the air.

The car was purely a concept and did pay homage to the BMW M1 (classic supercar). It was futuristic, and yes a bit strange looking…but an interesting concept car nonetheless. While a new sports car from BMW could take SOME design cues from the M1, it’s doubtful that they will be that strong since BMW has already said that they are not going to revise the M1 name. Also please don’t judge a car from a tiny dark picture. At least go and search it first if you already didn’t know about it.

I am not a fab of iy either, but lets face it: none of us could afford it either (ok in this lifetime). We don’t like it, but it wasn’t made for us either.

i kinda liked it, but i hadn’t noticed those rims, they are pretty atrocious…either way, it gives me a nostalgic feeling for the angular wedgy cars of the 80s, so i approve…

Whatever happened to the fabric-bodied car BMW had as a concept. Can’t get more green than a cotton-spandex car-body that you can throw in the laundry and wash in bio-degradable detergent, and then hang on a line to dry. Bee eMM Dumblefcuk

I remember the pictured concept from a while back, and I really don’t think it’s the “green” sports car concept BMW is talking about. I’m pretty sure there isn’t a picture of it, yet, so this was the best LLN had for this article.

There is no definitive proof that this car is ugly so everyone here is wrong. Besides, my Acura could smoke this thing.

No that is one beautiful car I like this M1 concept and by all means make it a green supercar that is the way to go. However, I don’t care for the Cars rims.
