Are you sure?

Seems to pretty clearly state that the current xdrive system uses an electronically controlled clutch pack to bias torque according to data from the various vehicle sensors...

Foster - I appreciate your response, but could you cite some sources here?

* AFAIK quattro runs open front and rear diffs meaning the traction logic can only fiddle with the forward / rear torque bias. I suppose you could argue it can bias power to any wheel using an extra layer of traction control / abs intervention.

* The current xdrive system can also dynamically manage the forward / rear torque bias. (Previous versions had the 40/60 split limitation.)

* Do you know what the actual response time is (ms), for either system?

I'm well aware of bmw's racing program and marketing management -- but just b/c bmw's not trying to market xdrive to the enthusiast community doesn't mean we can't compare the two. :)

As far a racing gos. BMW is not making the 335xi for that its made for traction in bad weather A 335i will handle better and will be faster than a 335xi. Really to compare BMW to Audi It would have to be A M3 to a S4 and a New 08 BMW M3 sedan and yes they will make a sedan again to a RS4 with 400hp it will be interesting.

The quattro is able to deliver the housepower quicker to any givin wheel up to 100%. And is 50-50 the bmw is 60-40 only given 100% to the front two wheels meaning 50-50 per axle not split per wheel . then uses the Dynamic traction control ESP on the Audi to controll wheel spin coming out of the turn or hard turning in. The bmw has better driver feed back and is a better balanced car. However the quattro is a better all wheel drive system doesnt make a S4 better than say a 335xi but its a better system and Doesnt use the ESP as much to controll wheel spin. And redirect the car using the ABS. But if you look at rallie car racing the AUDI WAS AND IS KIND untill they kicked them out becasuse they said that it was an unfair advantage. Funny how everytime Audi kicks up racing a bit everyone wants to kick them out. Really it depends on who likes drive witch car depends on how you drive. Thats why they are both a good car just differnet for different typs of drivers.
However on snow ice off road Audis are well better.

I'm curious, how many of the people here claiming that quattro is clearly superior to xdrive:

* Have driven awd b7-platform audi's and awd e90 platform bmw's back to back on the track? (Could be spirited street driving, just citing track work to clarify non-poor weather/traction limited situations.) - OR -
* Can provide a detailed technical / engineering argument for quattro's claimed superiority?

Reason I'm asking is that a friend of mine recent had a chance to sample an e90 330xd on the nordschleife and said he vastly preferred it to the b7 quattro systems. In particular, he felt the balance was better - a notion that was supported by the fact that the car had even tire wear, and in particular, did not eat front tires. (In contrast, there were reports from the b7 RS4 press launch of destroying front r-compounds in just a few track sessions.)

Also, I'd submit that the rear-drive bias of the x-drive system sounds like a compelling theoretical advantage.

I've owned both audi's and bmws - and loved them both - but I often read people's undying affection for quattro in particular to be more of a marketing achievement than anything else. I also find it amusing since quattro is a blanket marketing term for two mechanically unrelated systems - the longitudinal b-platform system and the transverse Haldex-based a-platform system. Is the similarity only the software logic determining the front/rear power split?

That diesel 3-series is supposed to be one torquey devil and a helluva drive. CAR magazine rates it as an all time favorite.

I agree with Angelo about Audi using Quattro to help balance the car. Audi needs to push their engines back. Once they do they can lure BMW loyalist away.

Course, Ford 3 litre 6 cyl engines (i.e. the mondeo V6 as seen in the Noble) when twin turboed do put out a lil more... 455bhp & 455 ft lbs torque in the Noble... hate to see the consumption figures though...

So I'm not doubting this can... I just think they went for a much more livable balance tbh

Quattro is considered better than xDrive, for both winter driving and spirited driving.

However, Bimmers are made to be rear-wheel drive. They only make xDrive for those that do not buy winter tires. Folks forget that awd doesn't help you brake (in any case it hurts by making the car heavier). At Audi, you have to get Quattro or get stuck with a nose-heavy front-wheel driver. At Bimmer, you have save the extra money for xDrive and apply it to the sports package and your set of winter tires/wheels.

In four years, you Bimmer will be worth more anyways, your tires will last longer too.

A4,
amen on the quattro. Much better system.
And yes, the A4 is underpowered, even with the new 3.2. For well over 40g's, it shouldn't be slower than most economy cars. Audi better wake up as this car will kick their asses. Even an S4 at 55k isn't as fast as this one will be.
jazz,
it IS conservative. Several magazine tests have estimated the true HP at more like 360-380. Claiming 300 is a marketing decision.
foster,
Chill. Why you always causing problems??

A4,
amen on the quattro. Much better system.
And yes, the A4 is underpowered, even with the new 3.2. For well over 40g’s, it shouldn’t be slower than most economy cars. Audi better wake up as this car will kick their asses. Even an S4 at 55k isn’t as fast as this one will be.
jazz,
it IS conservative. Several magazine tests have estimated the true HP at more like 360-380. Claiming 300 is a marketing decision.
foster,
Chill. Why you always causing problems??

Jazz Inline 6 twin turbo
Second no its not
To A4 it will be Called 335xi just like
the 328xi
Also it would have been launched soon but they had to figure out how to get the front drive axiles to fit with the twin turbos in the way.
Its not as good as the quattro system but its made more for snow than for handling on dry as well like the more popular quattro. However its better balanced than any Audi. It gives you a different driving feel.
It depends on your driving style.
There bolth good. And remember
Spring here is January in Germany when it will be launched first. And that is were they sell most of there awd models Mertzen not 4WD. They are different.

Forget about 335i, bring to North America 335d. Straight-six, twin-turbodiesel (2993cc), 286hp @ 4,400rpm, 428lb ft @ 1750-2250rpm. 0-60 is 0.6 sec slower, but economy is 8mpg (British mpg) better.

Why does 300 hp from a twin turbo 3 litre v6 sound conservative?

Please tell me that the name "335ixi" contains a typo. I mean, imagine if GM called a car a Silvettechevegovaelle.

/no
