Why does BMW keep replacing 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines with.. 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines? If this engine is brawny enough to power the portly 7-series, why doesn’t BMW develop something smaller for the 3- and maybe even 5-series for even better efficiency?

- Yeah… I envy the europeans. Always getting all the diesels (I’m a huge fan if you couldn’t tell ) but the average american car buyer doesn’t like the word diesel and thus they haven’t been popular over here.

Ahahahahahaha, so true, but it should be pretty freaking fast while still saving on fuel.

- I read in R+T that the 335d was already getting a 5.3 sec run to 60 so I can only imagine this would be around 5 flat.

Thank you A4. but could you imagine this beast at the track? I’d imagine a 5.5 sec jump to 60 and about 33MPG. Although this is pretty impressive, its more mediocrity for BMW to brag about. Who really needs a diesel engine that powerful? Most diesel big rigs only get 400hp and 700LB-FT torque. We want fuel efficiency. Not meaningless power. In Texas, that’s the last thing we need. Dallas is the 4th city for the worse traffic and 2nd behind New York for road rage.

Dante_JoseCuervo, in Europe 70-80% BMWs are sold in the diesel form. In Europe hearts and minds are open for a long time. I hoe BMW of NA would select a better match for diesel then 3 series

Sweet! 6hp more than a 335i and 142 extra torques! I can’t imagine what that would do in a 3 series. Although, a slightly higher redline wouldn’t be too bad. Either way, congrats BMW, this will hopefully open consumer’s minds up to diesel even more

What there is to gain pass 4K RPM? Low diesel RPM did not stop Audi winning LeMans a few times and Peugeot diesel powered car chasing them. My engine wrooms to almost 8K RPM with no torque to write home about before 4K RPM. What do you think is easier to handle?
