BMW X1 to be sold in Europe only?

09/28/2007, 8:40 AM

By Drew Johnson

BMW has announced the recently confirmed BMW X1 will be built in one of its European plants. Meanwhile, BMW will outsource the production of the Mini SUV to a third party. The decision to produce the X1 in Europe was made because the automaker believes that Europe will be the vehicle’s primary market.

This announcement could indicate the U.S. will not get the X1 as an unfavorable exchange rate would likely price it out of the segment. BMW recently announced that it will shift the majority of its SUV production to the United States — BMW’s largest SUV market — so keeping the X1’s production in Europe is a bit surprising.

According to Automotive News, Reithofer failed to name which company would be producing the Mini SUV for BMW, although Magna Steyr is a leading candidate as it produced the last-generation X3 for the automaker.

That Black Forrest is really tough place to trespass without rugged SUV. This decision means that this thing will be very expensive for anything but EU, and that is where it probably owuld sell the best.

Good, I’m happy these things are POS. The most flimsy car BMW has made is the X3, every day those things come in with all sorts idiot problems. Good riddance!

the problem about the US x3 is that its being built in the us… i had a rental x3 in the states recently, and it was about the same engine a friend on mine has on his over here in germany… fact: the US version is no match for the european version built in austria by magna…

When I was smuggling hashish from Afghanistan I used X3 once. It was not nice at all: got stack in the desert. Hummer is much nicer and you can put a lot more of hashish in it!

The X3 is one nasty ****box. It’s hard to believe it’s the sibling of the gorgeous X5.

The X1 shouldn’t be built. Full stop. Why have a mini SUV which is just like any other small car, only more expensive, less good to drive and far more pretentious?

Fire Chris Bangle and don’t build the X1. All opinionated of course.
