Now they just have to lower the price of diesel fuel. I have a diesel Suburban now, and I’m super pissed at the high price of diesel fuel now – higher than premium gasoline. The higher cost of the fuel is offsetting all of the fuel quantity savings I’m getting versus a gas model. Nobody is going to pay a premium to buy a diesel powered car if you’re running to stand still in terms of fuel operating cost.

I think mileage numbers are for X5. When Car & Driver drove Euro spec 7 with diesel they quoted over 40 mpg on highway.In Europe X5 with strongest diesel (286 HP) is rated 21/34 and 3 series at 38/42.

The 335′s fuel consumption impresses me given it’s 0-60 times. If it’s not a lot more expensive, I’d get it instead of the regular model.

golf4me: one of my workmates has both an auto Jetta TDI and a manual Golf TDI and I’ve driven both. They are excellent vehicles and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t impressed by his fuel mileage claims.

They are by no means, however, performance cars- and I do not mean that in a derogatory sense. They’re not meant to be. The Bimmer is. The fact that the BMWs have sportscar-like acceleration and still return mileage similar to a four cylinder compact is what impresses me.

Why not just call it the X5 35d or X5 3.0d? It’s already confusing enough that BMW sedans and wagons get *28 and *35 nomenclature when both of their engines actually displace the same 3 liters, while the SUVs and Z4 have to make do with 3.0i and 3.0si designations for the same engines.

Johnny, I guess the way I look at it the Jetta TDI is roughly the same size as the 3er, probably bigger inside, yet it will likely push 50mpg HWY. Like someone else posted, I think I am surprised they are not using a smaller/more efficient approach.

for economy Europe also gets 318d, 320d, 325d and 330d. And 1-Series comes in 123d guise (as was reported by LLN before) with 204bhp and 295 lb-ft with combined economy of 54.3 mpg (UK galons).

Europe gets 19 more ponies and 3 more lb-ft in 335d. But you could use DMS chip and it’ll get way more power and torque and IMPROVE fuel economy!

Considering it’s unlikely that even the sedan would come in south of 4000lbs, and considering the performance numbers, those really are decent mileage figures.

I would have expected better MPG than 23/33. I guess the performance is great, but if I’m ponying up 4-5k more for a diesel, I want to save real money on fuel. If I want performance, I buy the 335i.
