Fatstrat, until we see the satisfaction rate of BMW’s service for the vehicle I wouldn’t comment on this project just yet. They can rush it to the market but if everything goes well then more power to them. And of course, if it’s in US I’m sure their service area would confirm to the safety regulations to handle the new device.

Fatstrat–The last time I heard, BMW sold cars and quite a few of them. With each new model, the company introduces new technology which requires skills that were here-to-fore not available. The addition of hydrogen power to BMW’s product line is a greater technology leap than most, but I fully expect the company to handle it with aplumb.

1952 MG TD–Nothing I say good about BMW should be construed as badmouthing GM. In fact, every vehicle I have every owned has been a GM product as is my present car. I don’t expect that to change anytime soon. In the realm of hydrogen power, GM’s cars will be revolutionary; BMW’s will be evolutionary. Both companies are to be praised.

1952 MG TD – In London, England we already have the Hydrogen buses which have been in service for a few years now.

Who is ‘worring’ about service? I am just stating a fact of product development vs. time to market. The FACT that the service infrastructure has to be implemented can indeed be a time consuming project no?
I am also not saying that they not have plans ongoing for it. All I am saying is that it cannot happen overnight and the everyday feasibility for everyday people of this and similar cars are still years away.

Why are you guys even worrying about service? If they release it to the market then they’ll make sure you’ll be able to bring it in for service and all you need to know is they get it done. Better now than never as the early adopters will help them find the flaws and faults as to make the technology better.

If there are any stations here in N.A., they would have to be independant. I don’t think the oil companies would allow a soon-to-be competing alternate fuel source to be sold along side of their petrol.

Fatstrat, If BMW sells the car, then you can rest assured that BMW will have skilled mechanics in their dealer garages who are trained to perform all necessary repairs on the vehicles. With BMW and GM announcing within the last two days of their commitment to hydrogen power, the third-party infrastructure necessary to support these vehicles is assured.

Let us not forget that even if these vehicles are confined to major urban areas for the next decade, they will still have major benefits to our environment and our economy. Hydrogen is readily available. You don’t have to pump it out of the ground and refine it. Also, it produces no pollution and no greenhouse gases. By switching even a small percentage of onroad vehicles over, we can dramatically improve the quality of our air.

This is quite amazing. And the exact reason I like BMW. Also, so what that for the first year or two it’s a rarity and people need to be trained for it. Why is that any big deal at all? And BMW certainly has not just rushed into H2 technology. They had the racing car back in 2000 set a record for fastest H2 car in the world. And like mentioned the 30+ years it has been being worked on. The world is ready for something else besides gasoline and is in pretty bad need of it. Remember, if you do the calculations gas is uneconomical at over 4-5 dollars per gallon which is definitely where the rest of the world is now.

The car looks good. What will be really intersting is having it in production and seeing how it actually performs, As far as infrastructure goes it really is a chicken and egg scenario, but having the ability of the car to run either gasoline or hydrogen makes it moot.

Not sure how this car looks ‘weak,’ but whatever.

“Rushing it into production.” How did you arrive at that conclusion? Are you privy to information on the internal workings of BMW that we are not?

Don’t forget service issues related to the dealer network. I would be willing to bet that there are 0 trained techs out there right now. Also, what type of facilities and equipment are required to work on hydrogen vehicles? Probably need a safe area and more than just a code scanner.
Nice to see the technology being pushed and credit to BMW for it but lets not jump off the deep end either.

A really nice alternative from the electric hyrids and diesel. But the problem lies in the infrastructure such as filling stations and distribution of hydrogen. Need more time for it to work.

The research could be 40 years but it nothing if the car itself is not able to perform daily duties like the gasoline equivilent. Hydrogen has alot of problems which need to sort first.

By the way I preety sure that Mazda has a hydrogen
RX-8 ready to go into production so woulld’t that be the first hydrogen powered car??

Stuart, BMW has been working on a hydrogen powered car for 30 years. That doesn’t mean the car will be perfect, but give them more credit then that.

I can bet that by rushing the system into production it will be full of faults. They should have tested it extensively for any problems like they do for normal cars.

All they are trying to do is gain the title for the first hydrogen production car which is pointless if the car isn’t available till two years time. The title should go to the first companyy which starts selling the car at their dealer lots and only when it is in the dealer lots.
