BMW has officially launched its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Set to be available on every M3 model, the new transmission features oil-cooled clutches and promises to increase performance and fuel mileage while decreasing emissions.
Dubbed the M double-clutch — although it has also been referred to as M-DKG — the transmission uses one clutch for 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th and a second for 2nd, 4th and 6th. Five different settings are available in automatic mode, with six being available in manual mode. According to BMW, the new transmission shaves 0.2 seconds of the M3′s 0-60 time.
The M double-clutch transmission also features a launch control and gradient detection to determine the appropriate ratios when traveling up or down hills.
The new transmission is set to bow next month.
