Spied again: 2010 BMW X1 in traffic (plus illustration)

In November, the first prototypes of the all-new BMW X1 crossover hit the road. Today, our spies snapped some new shots of the small SUV during testing. In the context of other traffic, it’s easy to see how compact the X1 really is. We’ve also got an exclusive illustration of how the X1 might look.

The newest X1 also appears to take several design cues from the BMW X6, especially from the B pillar back. Despite the X6’s coupe-like inspired lines, the X1 should offer plenty of rear-seat head room and cargo space.

The X1 is expected to hit the market in 2010 with full time all-wheel drive. Its overall size is also said to be comparable to the Toyota RAV4. It remains possible that the X1 will share some components with MINI’s upcoming SUV.

Other details on the X1 remain a mystery, but drivetrain options will likely mirror those offered in the 1-series.

  2. the c pillar camo that looks like a scoop would be kind of cool if it was a real scoop for cooliong the rear brakes. it would be real sporty looking.

  3. Overall, automotive design seems to be headed in a bizarre crossover/suv direction that I’m not that fond of… BMW may or may not be wise to captalize so overwhelmingly on multi-suv/crossoverish-type platforms as if they are the universal future of automobiles….

I say this because *I* want a cool sports car from the maker of ultimate driving machines and the Z4 is all I have to choose from? No MINI speedster? No Triumph TR6 remake? No Z2? No Z5? They make a total of 47 Z4 Coupes and don’t want to lease any of them to the regular type people and I’m supposed to be happy? lol… Oh but I can look forward to a Clubman, a MINI SUV, an X1, an X6, some kind of SAV thing, and what’s this– a V-series-?? Is Mr. Mom the man at BMW now or wha-???

    ///rant over……

  5. I LOVE BMW, I really do. But please limit your models a bit. Don’t become like Benz.

X3 is as small as they should go with SUV’s.

  6. I remember back in the day when BMWs weighed south of 3000 lbs and came with your choice of 2 or 4 doors. I’m sure their’s a market for these things but the Ultimate Driving Machine has morphed into the Ultimate Hauling Machine. /whine

  8. Wish they made a 1 series on its own lighter chassis and spun the X1 off of that, max weight of 2900 #s, AWD and maybe 240 HP.

  12. I echo the sentiments of global_lightning and SwerveEarly, and especially about the weight of these things. With all the lightweight alloys and CAD going into the structure shouldn’t it be possible to make the basic chassis weigh less than in the past? Every model introduced nowadays, it seems, has x% better torsional rigidity and y% greater bending resistance and they just keep getting heavier and heavier. I mean, what were car frames made of in the past- paper mache?

Can’t blame the car makers though. Gawd forbid their latest little gem doesn’t get that 5 star safety rating, because EVERYONE buys their next vehicle based solely on that.

  18. Bah.

I’ve been joking that the BMW lineup is getting so big and fat that the new 1 series is already the size of recent 3 models, and bigger than the cars that made BMW great.

Looks like it’s not a joke anymore. =\

  20. W/O a squared back design, isnt this just a lifted 1 series sedan with a slightly higher roof. Zero gain in utility other then grnd clearance. Its a modern take on AMC eagle sedan which got outsold by its wagon counter part 5 to 1.

  21. Don’t worry people thing are only going to get even more worse. Next is the R-class rival (V5) and a smaller version (V3) which looks hideous. We still have to wait for the 1 series based roadster.

6ix - Do some research, BMW has more model then any other manufacturer (even mercedes)

Jaguar will be the new BMW

  23. This vehicle, left unclad with camouflage, still looks like camouflage; it is truly a butt ugly BMW.

  24. Looks like I’ll be hanging on to my E46 Wagon for quite a bit longer…good thing it’s still reliable at 130k miles! Will someone please make a great looking RWD wagon? Was hoping the G8 would come, but alas, Lutz bitch-slapped me on that, and the current BMW offerings are too damn ugly now. Forget Audi, as the last one I had (A6) was a piece of junk! Rrrg.
