In November, the first prototypes of the all-new BMW X1 crossover hit the road. Today, our spies snapped some new shots of the small SUV during testing. In the context of other traffic, it’s easy to see how compact the X1 really is. We’ve also got an exclusive illustration of how the X1 might look.
The newest X1 also appears to take several design cues from the BMW X6, especially from the B pillar back. Despite the X6’s coupe-like inspired lines, the X1 should offer plenty of rear-seat head room and cargo space.
The X1 is expected to hit the market in 2010 with full time all-wheel drive. Its overall size is also said to be comparable to the Toyota RAV4. It remains possible that the X1 will share some components with MINI’s upcoming SUV.
Other details on the X1 remain a mystery, but drivetrain options will likely mirror those offered in the 1-series.

I’ll take the Mini Clubman over this mess. The proportion is out of balance!
the c pillar camo that looks like a scoop would be kind of cool if it was a real scoop for cooliong the rear brakes. it would be real sporty looking.
Overall, automotive design seems to be headed in a bizarre crossover/suv direction that I’m not that fond of… BMW may or may not be wise to captalize so overwhelmingly on multi-suv/crossoverish-type platforms as if they are the universal future of automobiles….
I say this because *I* want a cool sports car from the maker of ultimate driving machines and the Z4 is all I have to choose from? No MINI speedster? No Triumph TR6 remake? No Z2? No Z5? They make a total of 47 Z4 Coupes and don’t want to lease any of them to the regular type people and I’m supposed to be happy? lol… Oh but I can look forward to a Clubman, a MINI SUV, an X1, an X6, some kind of SAV thing, and what’s this– a V-series-?? Is Mr. Mom the man at BMW now or wha-???
///rant over……
Im with you rotman,I hate them freaking small suv’s
I LOVE BMW, I really do. But please limit your models a bit. Don’t become like Benz.
X3 is as small as they should go with SUV’s.
I remember back in the day when BMWs weighed south of 3000 lbs and came with your choice of 2 or 4 doors. I’m sure their’s a market for these things but the Ultimate Driving Machine has morphed into the Ultimate Hauling Machine. /whine
god that is ugly. why why bmw
Wish they made a 1 series on its own lighter chassis and spun the X1 off of that, max weight of 2900 #s, AWD and maybe 240 HP.
my god, i am glad someone cleared this up for me. i was loosing sleep thinking that the car pictured was the x3…thank god i now know it’s the x1. now i can get back to my dreams of sex, money and booze
If they are going to build this, they should kill either the X3 or X5.
They stand up for some hot ****ing and Marcus actually manages to spout a little political poetry while he’s banging the **** out of this wild little babe.
I echo the sentiments of global_lightning and SwerveEarly, and especially about the weight of these things. With all the lightweight alloys and CAD going into the structure shouldn’t it be possible to make the basic chassis weigh less than in the past? Every model introduced nowadays, it seems, has x% better torsional rigidity and y% greater bending resistance and they just keep getting heavier and heavier. I mean, what were car frames made of in the past- paper mache?
Can’t blame the car makers though. Gawd forbid their latest little gem doesn’t get that 5 star safety rating, because EVERYONE buys their next vehicle based solely on that.
who cares about the X3 or the X1
An ugly X no matter what the number is
It is a seriously ugly car/thing/whatever
Ether they do a good job on there camo or its just plan ugly
Ian says he’sbeen working for BMW for a long time but apparently he gets his news about their models from LLN: ……… aka “long term lot boy.”
Bah.
I’ve been joking that the BMW lineup is getting so big and fat that the new 1 series is already the size of recent 3 models, and bigger than the cars that made BMW great.
Looks like it’s not a joke anymore. =\
this back end to me looks similar to older saabs
W/O a squared back design, isnt this just a lifted 1 series sedan with a slightly higher roof. Zero gain in utility other then grnd clearance. Its a modern take on AMC eagle sedan which got outsold by its wagon counter part 5 to 1.
Don’t worry people thing are only going to get even more worse. Next is the R-class rival (V5) and a smaller version (V3) which looks hideous. We still have to wait for the 1 series based roadster.
6ix - Do some research, BMW has more model then any other manufacturer (even mercedes)
Jaguar will be the new BMW
Horrible … like the entire lineup.
Bungled Motor Works.
This vehicle, left unclad with camouflage, still looks like camouflage; it is truly a butt ugly BMW.
Looks like I’ll be hanging on to my E46 Wagon for quite a bit longer…good thing it’s still reliable at 130k miles! Will someone please make a great looking RWD wagon? Was hoping the G8 would come, but alas, Lutz bitch-slapped me on that, and the current BMW offerings are too damn ugly now. Forget Audi, as the last one I had (A6) was a piece of junk! Rrrg.
What is up with BMW?? This thing looks like it’s out of the movie cars.
BMW has THE best camo out there. You literally can tell nothing about the vehicle’s lines…
The worst looking BMW series..
I like BMW’s but………..damn, will people really buy this just so they can say that drive a bimmer?
Further proof that being all things to all people isn’t good.
Yeah great spyshots…
best shots ever seen from X1 !! wow what a great close ups, and the rendering shows the real car I believe.
