Although it remains unclear if the new BMW X5 model will wear the ‘M’ badge or simply be called the ‘xDrive50i’, but one thing is for sure — the German automaker’s 4.4L turbocharged V8 will see duty in the X5 sport utility vehicle.

Just as we suspected, BMW has started extreme durability testing in the southwestern part of the United States, taking advantage of the hot temperatures, miles of desert roadways and mountains with steep grades. One of the first to arrive is this twin-turbo V8-powered BMW X5.

According to our sources, the 4.4L V8 will be putting out 407 horsepower with the new model making its first appearance at an upcoming auto show. The turbo V8 model will adopt the same ‘xDrive50i’ badge as its X6 counterpart.

However, the rumor of this new model being the X5 M simply will not die. If BMW does indeed decide to go the M root, the 4.4L would likely up the ante to at least 500 horsepower. Stay tuned.

I just want to know why. The decision to throw a more powerful and fuel thirsty powerplant under the hood of the X5 will accomplish absolutely nothing. BMW’s designers are totally screwed up in the head. First they make the X6, which is probably the stupidest looking “crossover” on the roads today, then they go shoving a more powerful V8 under the hood of the honkin huge X5. All the while new car buyers are fleeing from SUVs and super-lux symbols of gross and wanton extravagance like rats from a sinking ship.

you make it sound like everyone is ditching suv’s man! The thing is that this suv was never marketed for people who complained about gas prices. They have more than enough money for gas! And those people who have the money will not downgrade on quality to save on gas. I say, bring on these huge a$$ engines while you still can. By the way, is it just me or do the new engines from BMW look like crap compared to the old ones?

You are correct in saying that the people who can afford this kind of car may not care about gas… but let me tell you that even the rich care about image. If you lay off 10 employees from your company then go out and buy one of these a lot of people are going to be hating you. The days of fiscal irresponcibility and extravagantly wasteful spending are over.

Far too much power for your average housewife to wield correctly.

RaineMan – no it’s not. Extravagantly wasteful spending is what drives this economy. If people only bought what they NEED, and not what they WANT, the GDP would be about 1/8th of that it is.

Wasteful spending is simply taking a pause – it’s not going away. With super-low interest rates, and cheap gas, the cycle will repeat itself. Watch.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 (performance wise) is incredible. This is going to be BMW-ized counterpart with the incredible performance, and handling, and looks. Can’t wait to see one on the road (and probably track).
