BMW is making preparations at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant to build as many as 40,000 X6 crossovers a year, according to a BMW source contacted by Automotive News. The crossover coupe is expected to cost around $50,000, and target the Mercedes R-Class and Infiniti FX.
Deliveries of the new model are expected to begin next year, according to the report. Although recent reports have indicated the X6 is two years away from production, the supplier sources cited by Auto News are likely well informed.
BMW currently uses the South Carolina plant to build the new X5 SUV and Z4 roadster. BMW already has begun hiring at the plant, and at least four job fairs are planned in the area. BMW supplier Faurecia is working “around the clock” to bid on work for the X6. [Illustration source: AutoWeb].

IMHO BMW should build a Diesel rally-type CUV (like the Hellion concept) for around $ 25,000 instead of making pricey luxury mini-SUV’s that never leave the pavement.

This vehicle has some very similiar design cues of the late 80’s AMC Eage Stationwagon. It, too, looked just like someone took the body off a sedan, raised the suspension 6 inches and put the sedan body back on. Not so sure about this one…

X6 (E71) will debut at NAIAS 2008. Still not sure whether it will be a production version, or pre-production concept (ala Concept M5, BMW Z4 Coupe Concept, upcoming Concept M3). And will hit the showrooms soon after that.
There is also E72 X6 Hybrid in the works – the first BMW Hybrid. But it will come sometimes later during X6 life cycle, not at its launch.
Also US market complaint diesel engine will be presented in 2008 (3.0L variable twin turbo), as well as new F01 7er, M3 cabrio, 3er sedan & touring facelift & M3 versions, 2er coupe. 2007 debuts: 1er 3dr + 5dr facelift, 5er facelift, M3 coupe, 6er facelift, and 2er cabrio.

What a hieous looking beast. Leave it to the Germans to over style something to hide engineering deficiency. Look at the new Saturn Vue and then come back and you’ll see what I am talking about.

Tine, you are exactly right! The production version of this car is not going to look like the pic at the top in any way then. Well spotted Tine!

Saud is exactly correct.. no matter whether the X6 is truly a crossover, 4-door coupe, or whatever, there is no way it could target the Infiniti FX AND the Mercedes R-class simultaneously. The FX is a tightly-packaged 4-seater at best with minimal cargo space and a sporty driving position, while the R-class seats 6 or 7 and is akin to mom’s Country Squire in cargo room and driving position! And neither of them is a coupe by any means. So it seems that nobody really knows WHAT the X6 will be or what it will target.

i dont know what bmw wants the x6 to be but this is damn ugly. this puts the r class and infiniti as styling champions. i do like bmw even though ill always like mb better but wtf is bmw doing. audis look way better. bmw needs to find the right balance between overstyled and understated.

I still dont understand why BMW puts them into the 4×4 market… have you ever been in an X5 off-road? everything apon anything gets it stuck… and mercedes ML classes arent anything special, atleast you can forge ahead with alot less problems you experince with a BMW 4×4.
