BMW Z2 in the works?

07/13/2006, 10:01 AM

By admin

The cover of the latest issue of Germany’s AutoBild magazine features an artist’s illustration of the forthcoming BMW Z2. While we don’t have specific details on the rumor, the Z2 appears to be a small roadster slotted beneath the Z4 range. In May, AutoWeek and AutoCar reported BMW was working on a new roadster called the Z2, in addition to the much-rumored Z6. While it’s almost certain a smaller roadster is under consideration at BMW, we suspect it may receive a name other than Z2. As previously noted by Leftlane, BMW published the names Z1 and Z5 for opposition at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on January 17, 2006. Regardless of its name, the new roadster looks like it will introduce some new styling cues to BMW’s design language, including some unusual 3D headlamps. Update: Auto Zeitung is also reporting in its latest issue that BMW is planning a Z2 for the 2009 model year. However, the report suggests a coupe model will also be offered. Though, it’s just an artist’s rendering, I like what they’ve done there. Very progressive. It has some really nice shapes going on.

since the market NEEDS another 2 seat roadster in the sub 40k segment…. :shakinghead:

BMW, porsche, and Merc (I guess Audi too) need to realize their niche. They are trying to build a vehicle for every segment, which will dilute their status and eventually take them to the level of GM or toyota… the last thing they should do is try to saturate the market. At that point, one of the main reasons for buying one dissapears.

It’s not bad. Better than Miata, but not as clean as a Solstice or Sky. AT LEAST it doesn’t have that damn line behind the front wheel a la Z4! Just about the only reason I wouldn’t buy one of those.

Mike, Mercedes isn’t TRYING to build a vehicle for every segment. They’ve already done it.

When BMW is even following Mercedes into the dismal R-class segment, something is VERY VERY wrong.

you know that is the product of some CEO’s wife saying:
“build this car or I am taking the kids and all your money and getting a divorce! I am NOT going to be seen in a minivan, and I have wrecked too many SUV’s. Give me the luxury I deserve but DO NOT call it a minivan!!!!”

Yup JD not only is merc building a car for every segment they are creating new segments as well.

I keep waiting for like a MLS or GLS with a funky 4 door coupe jacked up on a AWD drive line.

What’s the point of this? Isn’t the Z4 pretty much the same size as the Miata, Solstice, and Sky? Or am I completely off? lol

same size, a lot more $.

so this will compete with the sky/solstice/mx5 and any other rwd 20-30k 4cyl 2 seat roadsters coming down the pipe.

It’s getting pretty crowded in that limied-funcionality/practicality market…

The Z4 is already too small for a 6′2″ person. Z2? … midgets rejoice.

WOW! I like it! I like the fact that they didn’t veer too far from the Z4 styling (which I’ve always loved, even though the majority of people hate it). IMO BMW should go with this front-end design for all of their cars, very aggressive looking.

If they can make it lightweight – under 2,200 lbs – and about 180-200HP – and under $26k…

I’m there

#11: It has new-TT-ish headlamps. They’re separated out but the groove they’re located in is pretty much the same shape as on the new TT or possibly one of the earlier R8/RSQ concepts.

I hope it actually does look like this. This rendering is much better than the ass-ugly Z4.

Pruce, have you ever driven a BMW? Do that first. #17, the company is only in trouble if they don’t Botox out the Bangle angles.

The guy who said the Z4 is already too small — give that man a dollar.

I still have a cramp from driving the Z4 Coupe last week. Beautiful car though.

Z4+botox=Z2?..nice! Though i think they’ll actually call it a Z5(bye-bye Z4!)..at 2800 pounds they’re back to what my ‘97 2.8 Z3 weighs and if the real thing is close to the pic, they’ll have captured some of the original Z3 charisma as well. Way to go BMW! Cheers! dk’97 2.8 bg R

Z2 is much better looking than Z4. If it weighs below 2700lb and has more than 170 HP, I am buying one. How much will the M version cost?? $40K?
