John Simister of The Independent (a U.K. newspaper) got behind the wheel of BMW ’s new Z4 range in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the U.S. Simister calls the concept of a Z4 M a “wonderfully retro idea” — a front-engined sports car with manual transmission, a long bonnet and a license to thrill. “Hardly anyone creates such a thing nowadays,” Simister says. Simister at first complains about the numb steering and awkward accelerator, but after some hard track time, his perspective changes. “The Z4 M is less about flow and momentum, more about squirt-brake-steer-squirt-aim-squirt-again. [...] This is the true sports car, the latter-day four-wheel drifter, the car that reminds you of the raw dynamics of driving without the veneer of civility most drivers have now come to expect.”
