The two-seat BMW Z4 Roadster offers performance driving satisfaction and top-down cruising pleasure in a traditional front-engine, rear-drive sports car configuration. Owners can select the engine power level, transmission type, wheels and suspension, and other high-end amenities that suit their driving style and pocketbook.
Two versions of BMW's traditional 3.0-liter inline six are available, producing 215 horspower in the 3.0i and 255 horsepower in the 3.0si. Most buyers elect the quick-shifting six-speed manual, but a six-speed automatic with Steptronic gear selection from the gear shift and steering-wheel buttons is available.
The exterior has changed little since BMW first introduced the knife-edge styling of the Z4, but what was once controversial is now accepted as trendy. A long hood and short deck offer classic sports car proportions, but the trunk can stow two medium-sized golf bags or roll-aboard suitcases, a rarity in this performance class.
The interior, finished in leather and high-quality trim materials, with BMW's careful attention to build detail is snug and entry and exit are awkward, typical for this class, but well-suited to the purposes of this car's design. A manual soft-top is standard, but an automatic top is available, as is bluetooth communication and a navigation system.
Handling is quick and agile on tight curves and stable at highway speeds, making the car suitable for daily errands and the occasional BMW club track day. Electronically-assisted steering is effective and gives good road feel, though some drivers complain that it's a bit heavy. Alloy 17-inch wheels with performance all-season tires are standard, but 18-inch wheels in 225 front, 255 rear widths are available.
Standard safety equipment includes high-performance brakes with ABS, stability and traction control which are useful on damp pavement, and front, side, and knee airbags for driver and passenger.
