BMW reveals new 8 Series Coupe

The M850i xDrive will be among the first to arrive, with 523 horsepower on tap.

BMW has officially revealed its new 8 Series Coupe, returning after 20 years of retirement.

The modern 8 Series Coupe introduces an evolution of BMW's latest design language, adapted for a long silhouette with slim window pillars and a "double-bubble" roof contour. Like the original, the new coupe features a wide track and long wheelbase.

The front end is centered by a hexagonal kidney grille that widens toward the bottom, flanked by the slimmest headlights of any BMW model yet.

An M850i xDrive edition will serve as the initial range-topper. The company has updated its 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine, delivering 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Drivers can expect to launch from zero to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, with a limited top speed of 155 mph.

Power is delivered via an improved Steptronic Sport transmission with a wider ratio spread between its eight gears, while the rear-bias xDrive all-wheel-drive system has been tuned specifically for the 8 Series. An electronic rear differential lock also comes standard on the M Performance package.

The coupe benefits from Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. Cornering is further enhanced by active roll stabilization, electromechanical steering of the front wheels, rear-wheel steering and variable steering ratios.

BMW expects the 8 Series to begin arriving in showrooms this fall.
