BMW celebrated a major milestone as the German automaker has built and delivered its 300,000th M vehicle. The milestone also coincides with the M division’s 30th anniversary. Lucky car number 300,000 was an alpine white M3 coupe.
The first BMW to roll off the assembly line floor wearing the M logo was the legendary M1 in 1978, which continued in production until 1981. BMW then launched the M5 in 1984, followed by the popular M3 in 1986. Today, the M range covers nine models and accounts for about 1 percent of BMW’s worldwide sales.

The M division took ten years to sell its first 35,000 cars, with more than 10,000 annually sales being achieved for the first time in 1994. Through the first four months of 2008, BMW has already sold 4,000 M3s.

The U.S. remains the M’s largest market, with the M3 being the most popular M-badged model.
