Why should a high performance engine be named engine of the year? It should be a DI Diesal or a hybrid engine, from an engineering standpoint. V10′s aren’t going to help the world ease off oil.

      Dean, that’s an ignorant comment.
They are one of the most successful auto manufacturers ever, so apparently they’re NOT overpriced & unreliable. My girlfriend has a ’06 325i…what a beautiful car it is. Haven’t sat in any cars in the same pricerange/class that can put a smile on my face the same way that one does when I take the wheel.
Maybe they’re overpriced because you want one and can’t afford it?
Don’t be upset, someday you might have the chance to own the ultimate driving machine…someday.

Ok, lets get real here. BMW without the question produces one of the best driving machines. Mechanically they are the best, but electronically they suck. Period. My brother owned 1999 740I, it was a joy to drive, but he had so much problems with the electrics, like CD changer out, Navigation needed to be reprogrammed and all other things. Now he has a 2002 330i, beautiful car but he says the electrical stuff is starting to kick in. Anyway he loves BMW and thats life.

You biased jackasses are a joke. They ARE overpriced. They ARE unreliable. They ARE NOT the most attractive cars on the road.

I could buy one tomorrow. I choose not to. It’s all about choice. And the lemmings you are will define your taste in this image-mobile.

I’ve said it before, I know too many people who’ve had issues that I believe shouldn’t have, considering these cars are the some of the most expensive on the road.

But again, the best engine hooked up to a sub-par chassis (in design and reliability) is akin to a young man’s heart in an old man’s body.

But if you lemmings are loyal to all of this, hey, it’s your choice. Whatever makes you feel better than you are.

BMW needs to put less electronics in the car, which will lead the reliability to increase to much higher levels than it is now. Less electronics = more reliable cars.

      Jon.

      Dean1541 days ago

… or learn how to put the electronics together so they don’t falter.

Spending that kind of money, I’d expect perfection.

      Dean,

Do you know of a ‘perfect’ computer? One that never fails?

Now imagine a car with very complex computer systems and quite a few of them at that, all networked together and hooked up to a sh*t load of sensors…see the problem?

Plus, the OS allows you to modify really stupid things like how long the front and rear license plate lights stay on after you shut off the car, do you want them to stay on 13 seconds? 37? Who cares? Really? I mean just have them stay on for a set period of time and be done with it. Its nonsense things like this that over-complicate the car and can ultimately lead to computer problems. The more simple the programming, the less that can go wrong.

The only way to truly fix the problem is to have less electronics on board; it’s so simple I have no clue why no one does anything about it.

      Jon.

frk, you talk about your brothers m3 having problems, well if the problem is in the rear left window that must be an older m3, there haven’t been four door m3′s for quite sometime. how many miles are on that car? and everyone else here who seems to be ignorant to the true qualit of the bmw. haven’t you ever heard “more performance equals more maintenance?” BMW is across the board leading in performance so they have a little more maintenance, however with proper care a bmw will last 300k miles no problem. which leads to the assumption if you cannot afford or do not know how to take care of one of these fine machines then stick to your passion-less toyotas and hondas, or your granola eating subarus. out.

actually, in responding to comment #5, only the 7-series and X5 are unreliable. the 5 series, at least in 6 cylinder form, the 3 series, the z4, and the x3 are perfectly reliable. the 6 series’ reliability statistics are unknown. so basically, what im trying to say is…you’re wrong.

How far can you drive the V10 BMW M5, before the engine lights come on?

My BMW didn’t start to have electrical problems til’ after 100 000 miles, but nothing is the matter with the engine. Small wonder they build the best engine. Gotta love those inlines and now, it seems, the V10 as well.

My bad, that Top Gear clip doesn’t say. but after the Stig takes it through the track, the whole dash lit up like a crhsitmas tree.
The M cars aren’t made to be reliable.
You’re suppose to be rich enough to also own a reliable commuter car.

    27. photo
      Anonymous1541 days ago

Hmmm, having an M3 and only having to come into the dealership for a recall, and having no other problems, id say they are fairly reliable. and my brother, who has a 545i agrees, as nothing has happened to his car. And we both agree they are the best driving cars out there. BMW’s are so popular among enthusiasts because they are made for enthusiasts. its not that we’re biased, its just that the company that makes them is biased. To enthusiasts. Like ourselves. So naturally, we love them! Even if theyre not the most beautiful cars around…….

“MJ”, monkey, primate, neanderthal, what ever you want to call yourself … I’ll post what I want, when I want, idiot.

I wrote nothing knocking the engine. However, I stand strongly behind fact. And that fact is these cars are overpriced, underbuilt, and unattractive for the money.

The fact that you don’t agree means nothing to me. I couldn’t care less what you think because I base my view on fact. You are an image buyer and nothing more.

But keep spewing verbal diarrhea … you’re exactly the typical buyer this company holds out for.

So they make an engine that makes less power and weighs more than the Chevy LS7 V8. And they win an award. Whoever gave them that award is intellectually bankrupt.

And don’t give me that “specific output” BS. Ricer math shouldn’t win awards. Results should win awards. And the results are that it is an inferior engine to the LS7.

p.s. The dash lit up because the blew the crap out of the car. They didn’t handle it with a manor that normal drivers would. They drove it, drove it harder, and kept driving it. Naturally if you do that with a car it will complain. The BMW just does it in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. I know I have tracked my 325i numerous times and have ran it very hard for very long stints with no problems what so ever.

But I agree, the M cars are not made for reliability. They are made as an excerise of engineering. They are made to go fast and handle well. You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari for reliability, I wouldn’t buy an M for one either. When you purchase an M you are getting much more than a car. You are buying the soul and the passion that went into making the car. This may not be so true with the newer models, but it has certainly been the case in the past.

    37. photo
      jsedlak1541 days ago

And I will say they are a bit overpriced, but you pay for what you get. And yes that is a little bit of the name brand, the classic roundel and the feeling of owning a BMW. But I can tell you that my friend’s MDX which costs upwards of twice as much as my BMW is a hell of a lot cheaper looking and feeling. My father’s ES300 is much the same way, the gear box is failing and it drives like a boat. My sisters Passat, god knows how much that thing cost, isn’t nearly as nice of an interior as mine. Where the CTS-V seemed clunky, plasticy and cluttered, my 325i is organized and to the point. It is comfortable, but rock solid in the turns. It isn’t the fastest car out there, but it gets me from point A to point B in a quick as hell time.

    38. photo
      jsedlak1541 days ago

Furthermore, one thing I noticed about BMWs is that the driver is always positioned perfectly. In other cars I have driven I have been too high, too forward, too backward, too much to one side, etc. When I get in my car I sit in snug in my seat and am ready to go. In fact I have started refusing to drive my family’s other cars because the driver’s positions are just screwed up. In the Jetta it feels like I’m on the front bumper. In the Odyssey it feels like I am on top of the roof and I am stomping the pedal into the ground and in the Lexus I feel… like I am riding in a boat.

But this argument shouldn’t be about the little whiny points you keep making. BMW is winning best engine, it didn’t win Car and Driver’s Best car (Civic Si). BMW wins best engines because they are just that, the best engines. They are technological marvels that produce lots of horsepower from tiny engines with only natural aspiration. They are unique, they have stuck with the I6 and made it work, made it beautiful, made it powerful. And then there is the 5L V10 engine producing 507hp. You can’t argue that the engine is not a thing of wonderful accomplishments. So sure the car it was put in may be heavy, it may be a saloon… but it will still beat the pants off a lot of cars on the road.

    39. photo
      jsedlak1541 days ago

And about the comment of them being ugly… Until you actually study the lines of the cars I don’t think you can have a full apreciation for how it looks. How at certain angles the car looks like it will eat you. They may not be your taste and that is fine, but you should be able to understand that the cars are pretty in general.

And I am including the new “Bangle” series in with this. If you want proof you just have to look to other leading manufacturers who are following in step and adding the, what I think is ugly, backend to their cars. So continue saying that they are ugly, but understand that it is your opinion and you shouldn’t shove it down other peoples throats who probably disagree with you.

We don’t care that you think they are ugly, overpriced and… underbuilt. We don’t care that you have this personal vendetta against the brand. You should move on, much like I will after this post and forget about us. You should go cream your pants about the car you love (F430 anyone?) and leave the bimmerphiles to their cars.

So in essence… please, with all due respect. Do us all a favor and stfu.

I think the choices are definitely biased towards where the Expo was made. While I think that the BMW V10 is a fine engine to take the crown, I wish that they take into account that not everybody has money to buy and appreciate the BMW V10 where it is only available to the expensive M5 and M6. They should have based on their decision on what people drive everyday and not these semi-exotics. I think Nissan’s VQ engine should have made the list because it virtually powers the whole Nissan lineup and is readily available for the everyday salary man.

I AM an engineer/machinist, and neither BMW nor Mercedes are worth the money for their high maintenence, over-engineered and undependable vehicles. I have to machine this crap! One failed engineering design after another. One failed design change solution after another. V-10 YES! a very correct concept for engineering component reliability, raising volumetric efficiency and reducing component weight. Having BMW or Mercedes design anything is like having Saks Fifth Avenue design tampons. Just “GIT ER DONE”!

I have a question though. The engine is great but the chasis still isnt to put all that power down. Ever watch that episode of Top Gear where a 355 Porsche Carrera with the carbon ceramic brake option beat the the snot out of the M6 in the rain at the Isle of Man TT? What is all that exra 150 hp doing!?!?!?
