BorgWarner to supply turbo systems for PowerStroke diesels

BorgWarner has announced that it will supply two turbo systems for International’s 6.4-liter V-8 PowerStroke diesel engine. The system’s — which will be built in BorgWarner’s Asheville, North Carolina plant — will be used in Ford’s F-series heavy-duty pickup trucks.

According to Automotive News, the 6.4L powerplant will use BorgWarner’s regulated two-stage turbocharger combined with variable turbine geometry. The new system is said to both increase power and reduce emissions.

A strike at International Engine Corp. late last year slowed the production of F-series trucks at Ford’s Louisville, Kentucky plant.

They are more known for their transmissions and transmission components but they were also contracted by Porsche to install the first non-diesel turbo system with Variable Turbine Geometry in the 07 911 turbo. If Porsche can use em for the 911 I think they are up to the task of truck turbos; and since their specialties seem to lie in diesel tech this should be a walk in the park. On a side note BorgWarner is already partnered with the Big 3 and other import manufacturers making them an already reputable source.

I guess it takes a disaster on the level that put Ford and International on front pages of all newspapers for Ford start acquiring working technology. The question is why those turbochargers weren’t used before? I suspect the answer would be cost.

Ford needs to drop IH like a bad habit and go with their own engine program. The 6.9/7.3 series was a good solid engine, nothing fancy but rugged and long lasting with good fuel economy. The last 2 engines, the 6.0 and now the 6.4 are **** pure and simple. IH doesn’t give a **** about Ford, give them the boot.

My comment is not so much about Ford, as about turbo for diesels. I’ve read way too many articles about turbo failures in BMW diesels (320d, 330d, 530d). Since we’ll be getting 2009 MY BMW diesels, maybe they should consider changing design/supplier for the turbos, since 3-liter twin-turbo diesel is based on the same 3-liter, but with single turbo.

International is still producing the engines. Ford just found a better turbo supplier. BW didn’t have the turbo for Ford at launch, so they are adding it late.

Ford will drop IH by 2011 according to most people. They are developing a new 6.7 diesel in-house and will be producing it in-house. The new 6.4 isn’t crap, but it certainly lacks the gas mileage boost of the old 7.3. So far, though, its reliability has been very good. I hope these turbos help a bit for gas mileage or power and are even more reliable than the old ones.

The turbo’s in the 6.0 are complete crap. They stick open or shut depending on how much carbon is coked up inside of them. The new twin turbo 6.4 has done away with the varible vane system on the 6.0, but is made by the same supplier. I think Ford is clearing house on crappy suppliers, and is taking the necessary steps to create a lasting product…not one that is “down in shop” all of the time.

Borg Warner makes some good turbos. They made the turbo on my GM 6.5L turbo diesel, and it has 167k miles on the original turbo with no problems.

BMW’s new diesel turbos are made by Garrett now, who also makes some of the best turbos in the business. I don’t know who made them before for BMW, but Garrett AiResearch turbos are excellent.

Dodge used a VGT turbo on their 2.2L back in 91. Must be the first Porsche with VGT.

Sorry, I forgot to use the word “major.” BorgWarner was contracted to rig up the first major non-diesel turbo system with VTG. I should have said that before but I thought it was a given that dodge is not responsible for anything major. =p

Problem with BMW Turbo Diesels lies in design. The intake manifold split causing part of the throttle mechanism to go into the engine, destroying it.It affects 320d, 330d and 530d as they’re all use plastic manifold technology. When manifold splits the swirl flap detaches and gets sucked in into the engine. I hope twin turbo diesels that’s coming to North America using different design.
