Boyd Coddington dies at age 63

02/27/2008, 1:38 PM

By Drew Johnson

Boyd Coddington, best known for his tuner and hot rod work, died today at the age of 63. Little is know about the circumstances of his death, but representatives of Coddington’s corporation confirmed that Boyd Coddington passed at 6:20am this morning. Coddington had recently been hospitalized for an undisclosed medical condition.

Coddington was born in Rupert, Idaho in 1944 but moved to California in 1966 to pursue his dreams of building hot rods. In 1977, Coddington opened his own hot rod shop — named Hot Rods by Boyd — and established Boyds Wheels Inc. in 1988. In 1997, he was inducted into the Hot Rod Hall of Fame.

As of late, Coddington was best know for his TV show American Hot Rod, which aired on TLC.

Global Warming is my guess.

Seriously, though, it’s pretty sad for anyone to die that young. My thoughts to his family and friends. Very sad day for gearheads everywhere.

I remember when first seeing American Hot Rod (the show), and it began airing with American Chopper… Seemed like American Chopper faired a lot better, since I haven’t seen a lot of American Hot Rod. Pretty good show though, don’t know much about him other than that. Rest in peace.

i remember his show also… it seemed very ‘real’ compared to some reality shows… i never knew about the feud between him and foose…

he seemed to be a very tense and stressed out dude- not good for the heart…

Boyd Coddington was a legend in the automotive sub-culture. This is a sad loss. His customs demanded respect, and he never went for the “Pimp My Ride” bull**** of modifying the looks/speakers. He modified the powertrain, and everything else – a completely custom one-off dream machine.

Farlight: I agree, most of the times it is not worth posting because of the pointless jabber that plagues the lln comment boards.

R.I.P Boyd, your ‘Boydsters’ are irreplacable.

I can’t believe he’s gone. And just one year older than my father. While Boyd seemed like a jackass to me, there’s no denying the effect he’s had on multiple industries. R.I.P.

Now we know who the real children are on LLN. I really do wonder about all of the **** fascination that goes on here. Latent homosexualality I am guessing.

I wasn’t overly impressed with his work, but he did press others into stepping up their game. RIP
