Brad Pitt drives BMW Hydrogen 7

06/06/2007, 11:53 AM

By Nick

Actor Brad Pitt arrived in a BMW Hydrogen 7 to the Warner Bros. premiere of the film “Ocean’s 13″ at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre yesterday in Hollywood, California.

The Hydrogen 7 is a production-ready prototype unveiled by BMW last year. Unlike many hydrogen-powered cars, the H7 does not use fuel cells and electric motors, but instead burns hydrogen in a typical internal combustion fashion.

BMW has apparently come through on its promise of building a limited number of Hydrogen 7s for use by celebrities and government officials.

The cruising range in the hydrogen mode is more than 125 miles, with another 300 miles in the gasoline mode. If there was no gasoline storage, hydrogen mode range could be significantly greater.

Although the H7 could be produced in a few years, the lack of a hydrogen infrastructure means most people probably won’t get their hands on one for quite some time.

I guess BMW is now competing against Saab for the gay demographic. I don’t know about you, but when I think of Germans and hydrogen the Hindenberg comes to mind…

If hydrogen is the future then where is the infrastructure? All electric cars are a better bet. By the time hydrogen distribution is in place battery electrics will have a range of 500 miles per charge, will be cheaper because they did not need as much research, and will still and ALWAYS be more efficient because instead of using electricity to separate hydrogen and oxygen and then putting hydrogen in a tank,
you just put the electricity straight into the car’s batteries.

So, by your logic, the same could be said about gasoline. 20 years ago this would be true about electric vehicles (to misquote your statement):

‘If electricity is the future then where is the infrastructure? All gasoline cars are a better bet. By the time electricity is in place gasoline cars will have a range of 450+ miles per tank, will be cheaper becasue they did not need as much research, and will still and ALWAYS be more efficient because instead of using oil to produce electricity and then charging the batteries, you just put refined oil right into the car’s gas tank.’

The Ocean’s series of movies are Hollywood turds.

Isn’t there enough room in the world for electric and hydrogen engine propulsion? Money talks though.

Both GM & Honda are working on an in home refueling system for Hydrogen powered vehicles. Honda’s is a better more well thought out system (IMO) but GM’s is just as good in its own right. I could see a hydrogen/electric hybrid becoming a viable alternative to the ICE/electric car. With the weight of BMW, GM, & Honda behind hydrogen (as well as others I’m forgetting) plus GM, MB, & Chrysler developing their new hybrid transmission all teamed with regenerative breaking technology like what’s found in the Prius and a plug in electric motor like the Volt, I imagine that would be a very impressive and fuel efficient means of transportation that you could refill in the luxury of your own home. Of course that’s all just a pipe dream right now….

Zer0, plug in electric is better because we’ll still be burning fossil fuels to make electricity huh?

Why do the electric nay-sayers always fail to mention/realize that it’s alot easer and cheaper to control pollution at a handful of giant generating station burning dirty old coal than it is to do on millions of gasoline tailpipes?

Don’t forget, hydrogen is only a medium for energy, just like a battery. It still takes plenty of electric power to isolate hydrogen on a large scale.

I wonder how long it took to get BMW people to talk to Brad’s people to make this photo op a reality.

Anyways, the technology already exists for modernized coal plants and next generation nuclear power. Upgrading the grid is far simpler than millions upon millions of cars as Random Jerk mentioned.

Hybrids point to the future because now auto manufacturers are putting money into battery research, not just the computer manufacturers. As range increases, the need for small internal combustion engine will diminish.

How is hydrogen only a partial cure? Imagine all the fuel pumps in the world pumping hydrogen…and gas problem solved, and the environment is going to be far better off to boot! And oh, yeah, the terrorists won’t have any funding for their acts of death, unless you think someone is going to buy billions of dollars worth of sand every year…

it would only work if coal and fission were used to make the electricity to split the hydrogen, otherwise we are back to burning some sort of oil to make the electricity.

Hydrogen IS the future, whether anyone thinks otherwise is irrelevant. Personally I really like BMW’s implementation of it: the same process as our tried-and-tested, good old ICE. If only we could find a way to cleanly produce hydrogen (very promising work is being done in this area currently) and distribute it, it’s a done deal. :)

I think the future is shaping to be a place where more than one basic fuel source will be used to power different vehicles. I bet that, like today, consumers will choose a manufacturer based upon what niche the company sells to. The new niche, however, will be fuel source. Some manufacturers might be known for battery power but with others for diesel, E85, hydrogen, or whatever else becomes available. It sounds kinda pie-in-the-sky, but I’m sure that at the least it won’t be like choosing between gas and diesel.
