2006300C has no idea of imported automotive history other than a guick look at what is represented as being "Classic" in American Classic Car magazines. Any car sharing a previous name should have readily identifiable styling ques obtrusively built in to its new design. The fact that a new Mustang bears an obviously related resemblance to its predicessor is a laudable fact. The 350Z bears virtually no resemblance to a 240Z-in fact-strip the badges and place the car on an Audi lot, and even the sales people would have no idea that it wasn't a TT! No die hard 240Z fan connection there...
The new Challenger is evidence that someone recognized that those baby boomers that would like a more civilized and comfortable head snap knew that recognition of the memories held in the Babyboomer gray matter would be a strong lure to buy a new car rather than restore an old technologically challenged one at considerably more money. I would quote the source if I could remember it, but most new cars bear more resemblance to a gumbdrop with wheels than a car.

Great news, I'm glad to see that DCX doesnt think they "need" to build 100k vehicles to make it profitable or worthwhile.

I, as well like the "Retro Rides", I have my 99 Viper ACR, quick... yes of course however, I still find myself looking for a real "Ass Kickin" Design reminiscent of 60's and 70's muscle. To me, the Viper and the Vette are great for "Modern Technology". The new Challenger will make happy because it seems to posses that "All Balz" attitude for the Staging Lanes.

#17 can relate to example of the "Bullitt " Mustangs both then and now. :)

you could say it all started with the VW Bug and the PT Cruiser...i think the Mustang is what sparked the sports cars to start with the retro style. Even Porsche and Ferrari are using some cues from there old cars. I see anything wrong with paying respect to the cars from the past that made the industry what it is today. The cars they are mimicking are iconic in name and/or shape. Anyone can see the new Mustang and know instantly "That’s a Ford Mustang". As soon as you look at the Challenger you immediately know its a muscle car. I dont think Japanese companies can do the retro thing because there are very few cars from the 60s and 70s that where as well known as the American cars. Maybe a 240sx or 2000gt but even those are not as symbolic as the American muscle. The Europeans could probably pull the retro thing off also; Lamborghini has already proven it with the Miura. Jaguar E-Types; BMW 2002; Porsche & Ferrari could also do well. Though i dont think the designs would be as successful as the American cars

When talking about the retro trend, don't forget the "new" Miura. Its EXACTLY the same idea as this Challenger, with very similar execution.

And damn, I love both of them.

Forty years from now the cars of the fifties sixties and before will still be admired and fawned over in museums and concourses. All of the cars of the eighties and nineties will be office furniture and box springs for mattresses. Nobody is ever going to dream about driving down a deserted highway at twilight in a 98 Lexus, the opposite is true of a 1959 Cadillac.

It should come up as post # 13 right in front of the Sublime Green comment.

The LR2 is going to be a great vehicle I think. We really need segment volume car for Land Rover and the LR2 should do nicely. Now they just need to get the Defender back into the US market.

what are they going to do about the Mustang GT500 and LS7 Camaro? The 6.1 doesnt make enough horsepower (425 i think, correct me if im wrong.) the 6.1 should be the base engine (no 5.7) just so they will easyly out perfrom the Mustang GT and Camaro V8 (sint the base price going to be a little higher?i would expect so with because of the lower numbers)...then for the SRT Challenger put the Viper V10 in it. If they can put it in a ram why not into this?

2006300C -
The original Celica, which was a curvier 3/4 Mustang, and the Nissan 240Z, and the 1st gen Mazda RX-7 are all Japanese models I'd love to see as inspiration for new models.

Too bad the Challenger won't be American made. It will be a vehicle foreign-made by a foreign-owned company. Sad.

I'm not so sure that this Challenger directly competes with the Mustang and the new Camaro. It seems a bit too big and heavy. More than likely, it will compete more directly with the upcoming retro-styled Monte Carlo or GTO instead.

Allpar is expecting a small number to have automatics coupled to the 5.7L as well as a flagship model sporting a 6spd and the 6.1L (SRT-8 Chellenger). There are rumors flying around that a select few Challengers will sport the 6.4L crate motor, but that is unlikely, although it would be insanely sweet!

[...] With news coming last weekend that DaimlerChrysler has given the new Challenger concept the green light, plant workers all over North America must be drooling at the thought that they may get to build the beast. The blogosphere is alive with the news and so is traditional media. Over at Leftlane, they have reported that the Brampton, Ontario plant will built the Retro Rocket, but hold on a minute there bucko. They’ve actually misread the Globe and Mail article they are quoting from. The globe reports that the Brampton plant is the leading contendor in the race to win the gig. Their production numbers, along with the fact that the other models on the same platform are built here. As sales on the Dodge Magnum and Chrysler 300C have dropped, the extra 30-40,000 Challengers would allow the plant to add another shift. [...]

Actually BB, I think VW's New Beetle might be the first one to do the retro design gig, and the rest just followed along...

#2 Asher: my sentiments exactly. One of the few things Ford did right was the "retro" re-styling of the Mustang -- which kicked off the current interest of the genre. By the time the Camaro and Challenger get to the market, it'll be too late to the party.

It was obvious from the concept that this car would get the GO. Look at the feature such as the Mirrors Interior etc. The car is practicaly a prototype and will look identical to the production minus the lights .

The camaro on the other hand was more concept and it showed with the feature like the mirrors and lights and interior. Its a long way off and will look alot diffrent in production form

actually, 2006300C, the toyota 2000gt (think is the name) was a gorgeous car that hasnt been copied, so that leads me to beleive that designers are just stubborn. i think that the "tero craze" isnt over, the market was just flooded by mustangs, and those are the only cars out right now under that design influence that i can think of. people are just getting bored with the mustang.

This has nothing to do with retro or modern because any car that looks good will sell period. I personally believe that "modern style" is an oxymoron and that designers of the past had far more talent than those of today. Japanese and Korean brands can not do retro because if you've ever looked at historical photos of their cars you would see that they have nothing worth replicating.

shut up about this retro thing your honking. it is retro but it works, the challenger has timeless design cues that will work. if i can afford it, i will be purchasing this car. it will come with a 6spd, and at least the 425hp hemi.. i wouldent doubt a supercharger version to compete against gt500, or a Z06 engined camaro. but they should try to build some with a v6 for selling volume.. or at least pleeeeeeeasssseeeeeeeeee sell a totally stripped out hemi 6spd. with no options.. even steal wheels so it can be cheap, those would sell like hotcakes.

Frankly, by the time this car hits the streets, the whole "Retro-craze" will be completely fizzled as it already appears on its last legs.

The whole problem with the new Camaro and Challenger is that is shows how slow the traditional car production process is - the only way to beat it and get what the public wants when they want it is to THINK and PLAN AHEAD and anticipate what the future Trends will be before they fully emerge - as by this time, it is too late...

While I would certainly like to see a V8-manual combination with the Challenger, I wouldn't get my hopes up since neither the 300, Charger, or Magnum offer such a combination. And since Chrysler is trying to make the Challenger as profitable as possible from off-the-shelf parts, I don't see a special Challenger-only drivetrain combination.
