Yesterday General Motors announced a bevy of changes to both the personnel and the structure in which they fit into – today GM has announced another major management position change. Selim Bingol has been appointed to the position of vice president of communications, effective March 8, 2010.

Bingol, 49, was most recently the senior vice president and senior partner with Fleishman-Hillard, where he was a senior communications strategist dealing with large international clients across many diverse industries. Prior to serving Fleishman-Hillard, Bingol was senior vice president of corporate communications for AT&T. Bingol was in charge of public relations during AT&T’s controversial $200 billion mergers and acquisitions. Bingol’s connection to GM Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre Jr. should be quite obvious since it was Whitacre who led the telecom giant to its current market dominance.

“Selim brings a wealth of experience to this position and his deep and diverse background will serve us well as we accelerate our efforts to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles,” said Whitacre in a statement released to the media. “I have worked with Selim over the years on several complex communication issues and he has my trust and respect.”

Bingol’s new role with GM will include responsibility for GM’s global communications – including global products and brands – as well as corporate, public policy, executive support and internal communications.

“I have been fortunate to have great assignments and work with talented professionals throughout my career,” said Bingol. “I am excited to be part of a team that is taking GM to new heights.”

Bingol will be filling the role formerly filled by Chris Preuss, who has now been appointed the vice president and president of OnStar.
