Certified car guy extraordinaire Bob Lutz, the man credited with injecting product enthusiasm into wilting Chrysler and General Motors in the 1990s and 2000s, officially “retired” last year.

But today GM announced that its former product czar has been re-hired to “provide counsel to the senior leadership team of the company.”

The automaker says that Lutz, who will turn 80 early next year, will work on a part-time consultancy basis. For now, GM is mum on just what Lutz’s responsibilities will be. During his tenure at GM, Lutz was credited with pushing forward the Chevrolet Volt, as well as enthusiast-oriented vehicles like the Buick Regal GS and Cadillac CTS-V wagon.

Outspoken Lutz left GM a little over a year ago to enter retirement, although he kept busy by crashing airplanes and serving on sports car manufacturer Lotus’ advisory board.
