Even to North Americans — who are subjected to strict speed limits when compared to much of Europe — it may be hard to believe a car advertisment could be banned for advocating rapid acceleration. But that’s exactly what happened in Britain, where an ad for Subaru ’s Forester SUV, which boasts an acceration of 0-62 in six seconds, has been taken out of print for putting too much emphasis on speed. The press ad, which received one complaint, shows the Forester driving along a blurred road, and reads: “Your right foot is in for a treat.” Bigger text at the bottom of the ad reads: “The new Subaru Forester . Press accelerator for details.” Getting an ad banned in North America typically requires a bit more effort — such as placing a billboard of a gun-wielding gangsta rapper next to a school.
