British auto aid package unveiled

01/27/2009, 11:35 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Earlier today, British Business Secretary Peter Mandelson unveiled a package aimed at helping the struggling domestic auto industry survive as sales continue to tumble. The package calls for 1.3 billion pounds – about $1.8 billion – in special funds provided by the European Union and earmarked for the industry.

The government will also provide loan guarantees up to 1 billion pounds.

Jaguar Land Rover, one of Britain’s highest-volume producers, has already stated that an aid package wouldn’t address the root of the problem – struggling sales.

The industry employs nearly 1 million Britons and accounts for about 10 percent of exports.

Stuggle, same as the Canada deal. It’s about jobs, not where the company’s owner has his harem.

I remember a British sales man I worked with, he had years working for Ford over in the U.K.. He came state side because his daughter got a job in the Embassy, so why not. The guy was good, but it took him a week or so to get in the rhythm of things, well anyways I made a 8 PONDER deal on a new Ford Thunderbird, he did not under stand what the big deal was. He came up to me and told me; “Hay mate, that is absolute rubbish!”, “that’s a bloody good deal, and all they are going to give you is 8 pounds?”, “Are they MAD?”… LOL once I told him, then he under stood.

And for anyone wondering what a “ponder” is in car lingo, go work sells at a car dealer, you gotta find out the hard way… Or rent the movie “Suckers”… but you may still be even more lost after watching it…

Is this like a crossword, where you have to wait a week to get the puzzle answer?

yeah……i’m lost on the whole 8 ponder thing…….I’m assuming he meant “pound”. I’ve worked in Car Sales and in the car industry for a while but haven’t heard that expression before.

Tom, on this site no one knows what crossword is, including me.
yarddog82abn, I am glad you are keeping your daytime job and not venturing into comedy or poetry or writing novels.
