Bugatti to introduce open-top Veyron

07/17/2007, 11:14 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Bugatti has long been rumored to be mulling over the idea of producing an open-top version of its outrageous Veyron closed-roof supercar, but now the Volkswagen-owned manufacturer has confirmed plans for a Veyron sans top.

The Veyron-without-a-roof will feature a targa-style removable roof over the two passengers in order to maintain structural rigidity. The detachable roof is expected to be glass, so it can’t be stored inside the Veyron. But Bugatti engineers think of everything and they’re planning to include a soft cloth roof for emergencies.

Autogespot reports that the topless Veyron will have to undergo some structural reinforcements that will tone down the car’s performance just a touch. But top speed is still estimated at 217 mph, hardly a letdown.

Bugatti is planning to produce 80 open-top Veyrons.

Has VW nothing better to do than throw money at this ridiculous, but highly accomplished car? Are they not losing money on everyone they sell?

Look at the picture above; it was designed to be a Transformer, which by the way is an excellent movie.
Makes me want a Camaro.

Ridiculous car… in a good way. Pure automotive excess. I guess a drop top’s the final piece of the puzzle. Sure people will bitch about how pointless it is, but thats just because they can’t afford one.

I can imagine that piloting this car at those speeds with the top down would be a bit like sticking your head in a wind tunnel, or behind a jet engine on full afterburner, minus the heat from the burned fuel. It’d probably rip the skin off your face.

The worlds “fastest” car now comes with an open top. I’d imagine that be quite a rush to drive. Top speed will be affected by who knows how many miles per hour.

Warning: Bugatti must incist the use of your seat belt. Crashing or rolling this vehicle without use of your seat belt may result in, but not limited to… being tossed from your car, or worse, being tossed 350 ft away from your car, possible hitting an above airplane.

Actually, without the roof it sucks the wallet out of your back pocket.

Is the Veyron actually making a profit or is VW just pumping in money like crazy? I think its the second one.

I bet no-one will have the guts to floor it with the roof open.

No money is being made on the Veyron. It’s halo product for a one car line-up. Or a little gift for the engineers.

Dont worry, CTS, your toupee would stall out the engine before it took off your head ;-)

For whatever reason I can’t see it having the same unbridled power as the coupe, the added weight alone would decrease it’s top speed. Nonetheless I’m reminded of a certain Barenaked Ladies song…

I don’t see the appeal of this car. They stuffed 1000 ****ing horsepower under the hood to set that speed record. So what? It’s an issue of brute force, not engineering savvy.

Stupid. And the car is ugly as a cerebral palsy kid.

Ha! I was thinking Million dollars although now that I think about it, if I were to ever drive such a car I could very well see myself saying, “Oh no, here we go as yoko sings…. Aieee!”
