    By Drew Johnson

Confirming earlier rumors, Bugatti has announced a new Veyron Super Sport model. Proving that the new model has the performance chops to uphold the Veyron nameplate, the Super Sport has already claimed the landspeed world record.

Improving upon the Veyron’s already impressive 1,001 horsepower, Bugatti engineers have fitted the Super Sport model’s 8.0L sixteen-cylinder engine with larger turbochargers and intercoolers, resulting in a massive 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 lb-ft or torque. To cope with that added power, the Super Sport features a revised chassis and improved suspension, allowing for lateral acceleration up to 1.4 G.

But the real story of the Super Sport is its incredible top speed. Using Volkswagen’s 13-miles Ehra-Lessien test track, Bugatti test driver Pierre-Henri Raphanel was able to pilot the Veyron Super Sport to a landspeed record-setting top speed of 267.91mph. That mark was reached by averaging the Super Sport’s two test runs, the first topping out at 265.96mph and the second at 269.86mph. The Guinness Book of Records was on hand to verify the record.

The Veyron Super Sport’s speed shatters the 255.83mph record previously held by the Shelby Supercars Ultimate Aero. Fittingly, the Ultimate Aero took its title from the Veyron in 2007.

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport will make its first public appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours this August, with production scheduled to commence this fall. The first five Super Sport models – finished in a special black exposed carbon and orange color scheme – have already been sold. Pricing has yet to be announced, but just 30 examples of the Super Sport will be produced – ensuring a healthy premium over the standard Veyron model.

I guess you offended two Mongolians somehow. I don’t understand most of the morons giving ratings here.

Me neither, but there’s easily more than 2 idiots on this site, so I consider myself lucky that I only got deboosted twice.

There hasn’t been any official test of the Venom GT to the best of my knowledge, they can claim anything they want until they prove it.

Hennessey claims 260 in 6th gear
1500 lbs of downforce at 150MPH

It would take a brave man
      To do 260
Especially in a 2500 lb car w/o AWD

But 2500 lbs will, as you mention, be really more like 4500 lbs with aerodynamics at 200MPH. So it’ll be close to what you get from this Veyron, except it will handle better at lower speeds too.

Problem on the Hennessey remains the inability of the car to put anything close to 1000, much less 1200hp on the ground with just the two rear wheels driven.

that’s not the hennessey’s only problem…aerodynamic stability at high speed is probably a bigger one…i really don’t give a crap what the estimated top speed is based on power/gearing…try to go 220+ in that thing and chances are it’ll look just great in a nice black matte finish just before it bursts into flames as it flips and tumbles down the track shedding parts for miles…

the veyron is amazing because it’s not only Jesus H. fast, but it’s appointed very well and easily controlled at outrageous speeds because it’s engineered so well…not that i’m a hennessey hater, i like what they do to raptor motors for one, but there really is no comparison between anything hennessey will ever make and the veyron…

        Well said leftwingagenda.

Let’s add a little catalyst to the flame – Hennessey’s reputation isn’t great.

      @dubuqueautoplaza

John Hennessey is a personal friend of mine, so I can tell you facts instead of rumors and factory claims. Yes, the 1200bhp Race version of the Venom GT, based on hundreds of hours of acceleration, top speed, and high speed stability tests, will hit 272mph…but until a documented, certified, and witnessed top speed run, that number is considered hypothetical. Such a test will occur within the next few months. But Johns team of drivers got the street legal 1000bhp version of the Venom GT to approximately 258mph recently with a production intent version…not a rough draft or prototype.

And the reason you frequently hear about new cars claiming the record is because there are hundreds of parameters that a top speed run must adhere to, including official verification. For example, if the SSC Ultimate Aero records a 255mph top speed, if there is anything…ANYTHING…about the car that isn’t factory spec, the record doesn’t change. Any supercar manufacturer can claim insane top speeds, but until its accomplished in a car that could be plucked straight from a dealership, it means nothing.

This is ridiculous. Figuring however that they beat the last record by more than 10 miles per hour, I think this new record will stay around for quite a few years.

I think it should go for as high as 253 X 2 then compete again against the Euro Fighter same kind of race only make sure to allow an even footing and I bet the outcome will be different than the first time. BV Winner!
